Just got here and of course I run into a problem.

The thing just won't power up.

I'm running:

AMD s939 3200+
1 gig ram
380W PSU (minimum for card is 350)
MSI K8n Neo2 Platinum Motherboard

The LED on the fan goes on for a split second when I power up, but then it just goes off and the fan stops spinning after 1 second. I've reset the CMOS and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem this past weekend. Thought it was video, but in the end it turns out to be a dead motherboard. Try another video card if you can find one to test the system out with, try to narrow it down.

Edit: Spelling. Oh, and the board is now being RMA'd Going to take too damn long.

So is the card new? As in, you just recieved it, just popped it in, and it wont post? Has your PC ever gone through a complete boot cycle with that card in?

Sounds like an RMA to me, if it's a brand new card. That, or you didn't connect the PCI-E power.. if your 6600GT even has one.

It's an AGP card.

Weirdest thing just happened...

Powered on and it did the usual. Noticed this time around that a wire was in the way of the fan. WHen I got the wire out of the way, the fan lit up and spun. However, I didn't get any video out, and when I rebooted, it still gives me the same old problem of powering up for a split second and then nothing.

Still may need that molex connector, just like Rage asked.

I know that when I forgot to plug in the molex connector for my 9800Pro, I was prompted with a friendly red screen.

Molex is the white tip 1-to-2 splitter thing, correct? One was supposed to be in th box, but it wasn't in there....

I have tried every power connector in the damn case. Unplugged HDD, and DVD and it still wouldn't go. Ugh.

my friends 6600gt didnt work until he plugged in the Molex
Molex connector is the power plug thats on the back of your vid card, just take an empty plug from your power supply and plug that bad boy into your vid card

The light fron the video card fan comes on when I power on and power off. Dead in the interim.

uh, if it the molex connector isnt plugged in it's not gonna work.

You don't need the white 2to1 splitter that was supposed to come with it, just plug an extra coming off your psu into it.

This all should have been in the installation instructions.

I know that much. Had the molex connector plugged in since the first time I tried bootup.

edit

didn't mean to come across as an ass, just a little frustrated that this doesn't work and I'll probably have to pay shipping to RMA it

Do you have another computer that works? If so, try plugging in the 6600GT in that machine and see if it gives you the same problem If it does then you know for a fact its your video card that is messed up.

What brand PSU do you have? Read off the information you have on the sticker of your PSU, especially the amps of the 12v rail.

+12V

max - 24A
min - 0.8A

Also, just noticed something on the card....

In this(warning 56k'ers) picture of my card, the part in the lower, right hand side marked "2R2" is loose on one side. The metal isn't touching. I don't know the first thing about soldering, so I'm leaving it alone...

PSU seems fine. As for your loose thinger there, I'll stay clear of opening links while I'm at work (most image hosting sites are blocked), so I'll take your word for it.

Time to RMA, unfortunately.

Well, I find myself in a catch 22 of sorts. I got the card to work, but I used a bit of tape to tape down that broken...thingy..... and now it boots and works fine. So, I'm not sure if I should RMA it and wait another week+ for this thing or just keep as is :-\

I'm wondering if soldering would help and how difficult it would be to do so.

Not my site. Was the first correct kind of card that popped up when I did a google image.

Unless I'm mistaken, BFG has a lifetime warranty. So if the "thingy" ever comes loose again, you can RMA it.

Hopefully this discussion of "loose thingies" will desist.

Excellent point. If I'm not confident in my ability to solder, would using that "liquid nails" stuff be just as good if the metal is already touching?
