BFG 6800 OC Performance

I recently bought the BFG 6800OC and I find that in Half Life 2 the performance I get is just a tad better than what I was getting with my 9700 PRO. I'm running in 800x600, medium textures and 2x AA 2xAF. I can drop down to 20fps and it's getting a bit frustrating, especially in Multiplayer. Others have told me that my performance should be a lot better than it is.

I'm running the latest Omega drivers.

I would think you should see much more improvement than that. I have a BFG6800OC with a pretty similar rig, and I was running at 1280x960 - 4x/8x, with infrequent dips into the 30s. Something doesn't sound right. Have you run other benchies to figure out if you can isolate the issue to HL2? What are you getting for 3dmark scores?

I am downloading 3DMark03 version 360 from Guru3d. I will also acquire the latest ForceWare Beta's from the Nvidia site. I'll get back to you guys once i've run 3dmark.

I ran 3dMark 03 @ 1024x768 with Optimal settings and 4x AF. I came up with 9333 3D Marks, though i'm not sure how good that is.

Running the Counter-Strike Source Video Stress Test @ 800x600 High 4xAA / 8xAF I got 98.8 fps.

I am now using the latest ForceWare drivers from Nvidia.

Before on some CS maps I would dip down to 20 fps. I'm going to try and see if this still occurs. It is concerning with a GeForce6 to be performing like that.

Ok..stupid questions..do you have vsync off? What's your aperature? BTW..that's a decent score for 3dmark2k3. Turn of AA to achieve higher results. And by all means..check vsync

Vsync is off, always off. My aperature is at 8x and in BIOS i had the size at 128mb. I was just playing CS to test the source engine and I had the game at 800x600 High everything 2xAA/4xAF and I was still dipping to 25fps in some areas. Perhaps Source doesn't get along well with my gfx card or there is something up with my hardware configuration. Either way I thought my performance would be a tad better :\ Thanks for all the replies thus far.

3200+
6800NU

I got 50-60 fps with 8x 16af with high settings in source.

EDIT: with 1024 res.

Your fps should be way way higher than that. With my BFG 6800nu unlocked, no overclock I get about 112 fps at 1152x864 (or whatever the res is the stress test goes at) with my AF and AA and 4x and 8x not necessarily in that correct order

Abit KV8 Pro
A64 3400+
BFG 6800nu unlocked
PQI Turbo 1 gig
etc etc

Ok after reading the OP I was thinking..when you switched cards, did you happen to use drivercleaner to clean out your old drivers? To me it sounds like a driver conflict of some sort. I would remove any traces of ATI or Nvidia drivers on your system then reinstall your drivers. Try the VXG 71.20b's. They're great and stable for these cards.

I had a fresh format with the new card, so I haven't had to worry about any of that. Unfortunately for me, my card didn't unlock successfully, so i'm running all at stock. Some people have told me it could be the fact i'm using a P4 (not as good in games as A64) or that my RAM is kinda noname (I'm not sure how good Hynix is.)

I will try the VXG Drivers, and i'll use drivercleaner to uninstall my current ones.

In my BIOS - should I have the aperature size at 128 mb or 256mb for the 128 mb card?

Did you install the chipset drivers and such?

Your p4 and ram wouldn't cause 20 fps dips at that res.

Something else is wrong

I uninstalled the ForceWare drivers, ran DriverCleaner and installed the VXG 71.20's. I also updated my chipset (Intel 875) and I will try out CS tomorrow (I find the Source engine to be where my problems lie - though I haven't played many other games.) as well I ran the Video Stress Test one more and my fps bumped up 1 to 99.4

Thanks so far for everyone's support. I'm looking forward to having this card really perform.

Bump up the rez
My card erforms better in many games at less cpu-dependant resolutions, such as 1280x960 +

I tried that - still getting drops :\ I can stand in a corner and get over 100fps but as soon as some models enter my frame of view my fps drops pretty steep. I do not understand the problem - I received a suggestion saying that it's because I have an Nvidia and Source is an ATI friendly engine, but it does not make sense for a new generation GeForce6 to be performing like that.

I unlocked my card and tuned down the aperature size to 64mb (half the card's RAM as suggested by another) and downclocked my CPU to stock speed (3.01 ghz) and I'm getting 9263 3dmarks in 2003. My HL2 issues are still present, but I imagine it's something i'll have to live with. Chipset drivers are all updated and i'm running SP2 with XP Pro.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Try the 67.02 drivers... that's what I use because they're the only drivers in the past 6 months I've found that actual render things correctly in Source.

when u say that its dropping to 20fps in HL2, do u mean the game hitches? if u do, u need to update the game. Its a known bug

It should automatically update the game through Steam. It has NOTHING to do with compatibility issues. I would personally try (re)installing your motherboard AGP chipset drivers, using DriverCleaner and uninstalling your current drivers, and installing those 71.20b's linked to in a previous post. I run in 1280x1024, 4xAA, 8xAF (16x6 and clocks in sig) and get around 75FPS in Stress Test and ~11000 in 3dmark03 (default settings). No reason you should be dropping to those FPS... even in large open areas with a lot of action going on, I rarely drop below 35.

The game is all updated and everything. I installed the latest Chipset drivers (Intel 865PE) and I installed the VXG drivers after running DriverCleaner in SafeMode. I unlocked my card to 16x6 using Riva Tuner and I made sure VSync was off. I currently get 9268 3dMarks in 2003 at Default settings (4xAF) and i've still be getting as low as 19fps in CS:S, especially when turning corners. The card runs at around ~53C idle.

NO...I thought it was 1/2 the systems ram not the vid card...If you have 1gb set agp aperature to 512mb...I only have a 128mb card like yours and I saw a boost going to there...64mb is too low.....

Something is really wrong here. Oh wait..in your Source display settings do you have vysnc off? I know you said you had vsync off but maybe you have it off in your display settings but not in Source or HL2? Or maybe you have vsync to off instead of always off?

Vsync is off in Source. It's set to Always off in the ForceWare setup.

As for the aperture size, I have it set at 256mb, which is the most my motherboard offers.

Other Source players have indicated that it may be time for me to go A64, though that's not something I can budget at this point in time.

It's not the cpu..I can guarantee that. I wonder if it's possible you're having an I/O error..but most likely not as of late they're unheard of. And of course you did plug in the molex connector? What are you using for a sound card? And what drivers are you using for that? Can you list in detail every component in your system? I hate to say you have a bunk card because I honestly don't think that's the case. Have you ran Prime95 with your system? If not, run it overnight and then the next day. If you come up wtih errors..that could be the problem.
