I have noticed that if I play warcraft 3 long enough the fan kicks its speed up and becomes very
loud. I quickly have checked the temp at these times and find it to be relatively low (63) compared
to when i play doom 3 for example (79-81). When I am dooming for a long time the fan has never
jumped up in speed like that. Anyone know if this is normal? Why it might be doing it? Or having the
same thing happen as me?

The card has worked great for a month and just started doing this a few dasy ago. I'm a little concerned.

Thanks
Taank

The fan speed is controlled in the drivers as far as I am aware.

What might be happening is that the fan speed in controlled properly ie turned up when using Direct3D but isn't when using OpenGL. This might explain why the fan behaves the way it does. Easy way to check this is play lots of different games using the two different API's.

If you have a game that can use either Direct 3D or OpenGL try that and see what happens.

PS You haven't by any chance changed the drivers just prior to the problem starting?

Didn't think about it that way, interesting. So if thats true then there is a problem with it not going up
in OpenGL games, and the cards getting very hot and not being properly cooled? To be honest, if a
temperature of 79-83 is acceptable when playing doom, im content with the fan not going up high,
that is way too loud.

I have not changed the drivers recently. Unfortunately I only have a couple games installed at the moment.....ill look at what games I have that can be direct3d or opengl (if any) and install them and
test your theory.

FYI... My temp is like Idle=56 Warcraft3=63 Doom3=82

Curious to know how you hear your fan while your playing WC. Do you play with the sound off?

That, is a good question.

I find WC3 really heats up my cpu. Perhaps it does your's as well, thus raising the case temps. Justa guess.

WC3 has an OpenGL and D3D renderer, so you can test the theory.
