go to your favorite online coupon website and search for latest deals from best buy.

Well, when they are selling for $599 pretty much everywhere, I don't know why considering $50 would be so far fetched for a hot deal.

No, you weren't mistaken. It IS indeed a joke, whether the OP intended it that way or not.

I _really_ don't understand paying this much for a video card. Ever.

On something worth $600, a $50 savings would normally br hot. This, however is like buying gas for $3.25/gallon and calling it a hot because it's $3.75/gallon everywhere else. Just because it's $.50 less a gallon doesn't mean it's not still horribly overpriced.

When you've been using a temporary PCI-E card for over a year (one with the approximate power of a GF4 Ti4200) waiting for the PCI-E versions of the 6800GT and 6800U to actually drop below last year's MSRP and never seeing it happen until the next generation came out, 10% below MSRP less than a week after launch--and for the most popular brand, no less!--is a breath of fresh air.

Now to get back on topic instead of responding to the thread crapping, Best Buy is now Out of Stock, but the coupon is good until July 9th so keep an eye on the stock!

no kidding. i remember my dad paid about $200 for a cga card and another $100 for a monochrome card way back in the 80s. however, because of that we also got dual monitor support: cga and monochrome! boy, i sure miss those days. well not really.

I'd have to pay $42 in tax, so the $50 off nullifies it. There are better deals on untaxed cards from vendors out of state.

Seriously though, I liked it better when the new top end cards actually made it down to $399 upon release. I believe it started after the GF2 Ultra...GF3 could be had for $400, same with the Ti 4600 and 9700/9800Pro...after it.

I don't think the fierce competition is helping. nVidia had none during the GF3 days - no need for an "Ultra", the Ti500 was a mere update. Same with the Ti 4600. Then the 9700Pro hit and squashed the 4600 and the FX line was flop.

Now the battle is/has been a dead lock on the flagship front. The companies are forced to push their silicon to the max which most likely means low yeilds. Then in order to make sure their flagship parts don't have competition from their higher yeild next to top end parts they hold 'em back. Its why the 6800GT was such a "good deal" weiging in at a mere $399, the gold standard price of flagships parts of yesteryear.

Although I'm one who thinks that even $400 is way too expensive for a single card, and now I'm trying to justify it as a fair price that has come and gone, lol

3.75 a gallon is very inexpensive for gasoline, in Europe they would line up for that price. Why we insist on low gas at any price politically and environmentally for the US is somewhat of a mystery. Your income taxes pay for roads and for helping to keep the oil flowing, wouldn't higher gas prices make more sense in order to ensure that the users where the payers?.

As for the card, consumer level gaming cards are going to keep getting more expensive as we get more affluent as gamers with a desire for remarkable graphics. Really, such prices are silly and are set by the manufacturing cost of making these cards for so few people, as a year or two goes by the price will drop as the supply increases to meet the demand, and then will bottom out further when the demand drops because the cards cant do enough teraflips of polygons in 3D or whatever.

Posting 50$ off is a hot deal since it identifies the cheapest CURRENT price for hardware today that a forum member may be looking for.

So soryy for the rant and thanks to the OP.

C'mon fellas, put it in perspective. I can remember back in the day when I worked for Inacomp computers and we sold IBM PS/2 Model 50's (286's) for nearly 3 large.

I do agree that you can do just fine with a $250 vid card these days, even with the newest games like BF2.

A $250 vid card won't do nuthin for me. World of Warcraft at 1900x1200 on my Dell 24" with a 6800 Ultra bogs down to a slideshow with all details turned on. $599 is nothing to pay for something I use so much...but $1200 is alot for SLI and another $500 for a new SLI motherboard is hard to take.

Sales tax ruins the deal in most states.

Well I'm not sure why you would want 2 of these in SLI just to play WOW concidering 1 7800 card is as fast as 2 6800 Ultra's in SLI. Also as was commented right after.... where are you buying a SLI motherboard for $500? Most SLI boards are below $200. One of the most popular boards, the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, is selling for $165 from Newegg.

Granted 2 7800 cards in SLI would be awesome but not necessary even at 1900 x 1200, especially for WOW.

I refuse to pay these kind of prices for a video card, My X800pro I paid $338 for last year is the limit for me.

Its real simple guys - don't buy these cards and prices will drop - classic supply and demand. If there is no demand, they have to lower prices to create it.
