hey all have not been on in a long time and not building new rigs for a while. i don't have any issues with my 8800gt from BFG but was wondering if either of these sub $150 cards is a worthy upgrade.

evga GTS 250 1gb 256 bit gddr3 or, evga 9800gtx 512mb 256 bit gddr3 both have 128 stream procs the gts 250 eeks out about 75mhz on the core clock and of course another 512mb of on board memory.

i play AA3, COD world at war and buying COD modern warfare, Titan Quest IT. these are the only graphics intensive games i play. would modern warfare warrant an upgrade in video cards ? thanks for any and all replies.

Here is a review featuring the Evga Geforce GTS 250 1GB and Inno3D GeForce 9800 GTX+.

As you can see it's a pretty close result because the GeForce GTS 250 is a GeForce 9800 GTX but the 1GB Memory and slight core speed increase is good.

Evga GeForce GTS 250 scored 8/10 and was awarded Best Buy

An upgrade from an 8800GT OC to a 9800GTX or GTS 250 is going to be a marginal upgrade. If you're going to spend $150, look for a used 4890, or even a 4870 1gb, which would run under $150, but would offer a more noticeable upgrade from an 8800GT.

(I actually have a BFG 8800GT OC AND an EVGA 9800GTX)

I play different games from you and made the same upgrade to BFG GTX 260 OC a month ago and it has been my best upgrade in 2 years though I'm debating a quad core.

I was happy to find Best Buy had XFX 4890's on sale for 179.99 this week. I was then able to sell my 8800GT for 50.00 for a guy at work. It made to one heck of an upgrade for only 129.99 for me.

For a 24" LCD, I imagine you game at 1920x1200? In that case, I think the 8800GT will start to show it's age in some newer games like CoD : MW2. As mentioned, both the GTX260 OC and 4890 are great upgrades, anything less probably wouldn't be worth it. And FWIW, a video card upgrade will give you much more improvement in games over any CPU upgrade; there's nothing wrong with your E6750 (just overclock it if you haven't already).

MW2 isn't very demanding at all. My 8800gt seems to handle it just fine at that resolution.

What FPS do you get (curious)? I still wouldn't bother upgrading to anything less than a GTX260 or 4890 though.

If you can SLI on your mobo, try finding another 8800GT for cheap and do that. It beats down just about every game I throw at it at 1920x1200 with everything on full, only needed to compromise on AA at times because they're only 512MB cards. Batman: Arkham Asylum turns into a slide show at points with AA on, but runs a steady 45-60 fps with it turned off. Looks great.

With the rig in sig, I've been quite happy with video performance and can see rolling deep into 2010 with these cards until something way better and reasonably priced comes along. Sure, I can't run Crysis at 1920x1200, but it's a no fun eye candy game so BFD.

I thinks its funny that you recommended another 8800gt then right after say the reasons it would be silly to do that. lol. yeah another 8800gt card at 1920 is not really a good idea since with only 512mb it defeats the whole point which being able to crank AA and settings.

I went to a 4890 from my BFG 8800GTX OC. Was able to push the quality settings much higher/maxed. I ran at 1600x1200, now 1920x1200.

Picked up the card for $170, got bing cash and sold my 8800GTX for about $200+shipping on ebay.

It depends on the game. Source engine games (HL2, L4D) run at high resolutions AND high AA levels. Modern Warefare 2 is running IIRC with 4X AA. Anti-aliasing isn't as crucial at high rezes as it was in the old days when 1024x768 was a big deal. I'm not noticing much jagginess in Batman with it off.

I've got a 2900Pro and play similar games as you, and I wouldn't upgrade to less than a 4890 right now. I'm going to try to hold out a few more months to save up for a 5850 though.

That's a nice upgrade (plus you got $30 for getting faster performance) :awe:

As for the guy who paid $200+shipping for an 8800GTX, he lives on another planet Every minute a sucker is born!
