If anyone is building a high end system this power supply will be awesome.

If it was available anywhere two months ago I would have bought it.

I do think highly of the Antec True Power Quattro. It's a great PSU. But you don't have to take my word for it that the BFG ES-800 is a significantly better unit and therefore a better value for only $7 more.

Compare apples to apples.

Is a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W a better value at $150 than an ePower Zumax 750W at $119? The Zumax is cheaper? Must be a better value, right?

Do you consider a Hyundai Elantra a better value because it's cheaper than an Acura TSX? TSX costs almost twice as much. They're both four cylinder engines.

jonnyGURU, what case what high wattage PSU would you recommend for the newly released Antec Twelve Hundred? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...ec%2bTwelve%2bHundred)

I've heard fantastic things about the Turbo-Cool 860 PSU, and was about to get it. But then I heard that it might not fit with the Antec Twelve Hundred because it has the PSU at the bottom and the cables might not be long enough to reach.

I haven't played with that case so I don't know if it needs longer cables or not. I generally don't care for cases with the PSU on the bottom unless they flip the board too (BTX-esque) so I probably won't be running out to buy one to find out.

Companies like BFG, Cooler Master, Antec, PC Power, etc. don't make power supplies. They source from different OEM's. Topower, SevenTeam, Enhance, Seasonic, etc.

Some companies, like Cooler Master (since you brought them up in particular), have different levels of products to suit different price points. For example: eXtreme Power is a budget PSU, rated at peak and at 25°C. The Real Power Pro, on the other hand, is a kick ass product.

Keep this on topic without thread craps or it's locked. I've edited it once, I won't do it a second time.

Yup, wasn't it one of the top "tiers" back when you kept a list? However, I still think it's too noisy. Finally found a use for it... found someone in Texas that's cross-trading me (he's willing to ship first, too) a PCP&C 610W that's nearly new and an Antec Neopower HE 550W that's about a year old for my Quattro 850W. Good riddance! I know the Neopower will be quieter. The PCP&C, well... I'll just have to find a buyer for it, LOL.

Yeah... it was like tier two or three.

BTW: I talked to someone that talked to someone at Buy.com and they said they're getting these back in stock, at this price, by the end of the week.

For these large (800W) PSUs, is it true that if you use it at way below the maximum load (say you use it at 400W), that the efficiency would suck, since they are tuned to have best efficiency at around the max load? Also, is there a relationship between efficiency and max load rating of a PSU? i.e. in general, are 500W PSUs or 800W PSUs more efficient?

This seems like an excellent power supply, and for a good price.

I feel its necessary to point out that jonnyGURU works for BFG as one of their power supply product managers. (Perhaps he is responsible for their quantum leap in quality?) Many of us Anandtech regulars are aware of (and quite thankful for) jonnyGURU's extremely thorough power supply reviews and in-depth knowledge of power supply design and quality, but is important to know when he is recommending his own product vs. conducting an independent review.

Granted, he links to several 3rd party reviews of the product but I feel full disclosure is important.

Not necessarily. Most "high efficiency" PSUs aim for the 80 Plus certification which requires 80% or greater efficiency at a wide range of loads (25-100%).

I don't know if this PSU has that certification, but it would appear to meet the criteria based on HardOCP's review where it maintains 80%+ efficiency at 25%, 50%, 75% and 93% loads.

No not really, maybe some very low power PSUs don't bother with being highly efficient, but its really all about how the unit is designed, not its capacity.

I, too, work for BFG.

It's kind of a juggling act, being helpful while trying to not be a shill. Note that we aren't the "official" voice of BFG on these forums (Newegg, Antec, Corsair have "official" reps here). We both (me and JG) have been on Anandtech forums for YEARS before we were hired at BFG. If in the future we no longer worked for BFG, I'm sure we'll both still be here.

We are who we are.

I didn't know you worked for bfg, Zap. Hmmm..... Well that changes...... Nothing! I still respect you.

I also didn't know Newegg had a rep on these forums. Who?

If anything BFG now has a better reputation in my book for hiring such knowledgeable people.

Gasp indeed :Q...

Well that was unexpected. I actually knew JG had accepted a job at BFG a while ago, but the Zap revelation is a bit of a shocker. I don't mean that in a bad way, just that it's unexpected based on what little I know about Zap's rig specs. I wasn't aware of any BFG parts in his own rigs - I've seen eVGA cards and Antec/Corsair PSUs in his rig pics.

I mean, do you guys not get employee discounts at all?
