The online PSU calculators play it safe and give an inflated value, take my post for example, I'm supposed to be running a 400W+ PSU for my 5900 to function according to them (BFG).

EDIT: Clarification

vfibsux:
You have an exaggerated view of my concern for you personally if you think I'm trying to "discredit" you.

Rollo seems to be on a quest to discredit me, let me say I never said it would be impossible for anyone to run this card with a 300w PS

Really?

if you have a 300w power supply don't bother with this card until you get a more powerful PS.

This is what I wanted to "discredit", because obviously that's not the case, as some others seem to have no problems with their 300W psus. I don't want people to spend money on psus based on bad advice, and your advice was based on one experience with bargain equipment. The other posts seem to prove you can run the card fine with better equipment, at 300W?

Bottom line is with todays high-end video cards, we need decent Power Supplies. Since PS quality varies, it will be hard to judge the exact specification. When someone asks these days, I recommend an average 400w PS.

Barton 2500@3200 spec, two sticks of 512MB, a 120GB Seagate, and a DVD-R drive.

A quality PSU makes ALL the difference.

crzylgs, didn't you read vfibsux post?
He said not to bother with a 5900 if you don't have a 350 watt psu. Your 300 watt is clearly not working.

And neither is everyone's Shuttle 200W.

Or my 185W that bumps an AIW 9800.

No no no.

How can I be expected to believe all you guys?! Vfibsux has stated time and time again that he only buys well researched quality components, and they won't run his 5900 with a 300w psu.

You other guys have to be mistaken, you just can't run a 5900 with less than 350 watts.

well, i my p4 2.6@3.25 wasn not completely stable with my antec 350w trupower.. but no issues whatsoever w/ my 480w. again, it depends on the peripherals.

mine runs 2 optical drives
4 hard drivers
water pump, fans, and all associated with that
cathode tubes
sb audigy
ati tv wonder

and of course multiple items which run off usb power....

worked fine w/ my 9600pro, however 9700pro, 9800pro, 5900nu, all had issues until i upgraded the ps. would be hard to convince me this setup would be fine on a 200w ps as my 350w antec was working it's ass off tyring to keep up with all that
