Before I pull the switch....is this GTS a good deal?
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143081

Can't decide whether to wait until around Oct-Dec or pull the switch on this one now. Plan
on possibly upgrading to the Quad core late July when the price is below 300 and pair it with this. Or I could buy a BFGs 7950 for 150$ now then upgrade later when the prices have fallen or the 8900 is out.

I had the same dilemma. As you can see from my sig, I opted to go for the cheap Dx9 solution for now, since I won't be getting Vista for a while anyway. I'm willing to wait a year and a half to upgrade the video card though. If you want Dx10 sooner (i.e. this year), you might as well get the 8800GTS now.

How much more powerful is the BFG 8800 gts over the 7950 as far as pumping the polygons out? I like the fact the 8800 has 640 ram and also the fan exhausts through the back of the case. I'm using a Lian 2100 case and the more hot air I get out the better.

Also I'm going BFG this time as I didn't have luck with EVGA last time. My old 7800 card flaked out....got artifacts on the screen.... so sent it back and they said the express tab was chipped due to customer insertion so no luck getting another replacement. Oh well needed to upgrade anyway.

GeForce 7950 GT 512MB | core clock: 550 | memory clock: 1400 | * 8:24:24:16 | fillrate in MT/s: 13200 | bandwidth in GB/s: 44.8 | bus width 256-bit

* Vertex Shader Units : Pixel Shader Units : Texture mapping units : Render Output Pipelines

GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB | core clock: 500 | shader clock: 1200 | memory cock: 1600 | ** 96:24:20 | fillate MT/s 24000 | bandwidth GB/s 64.0 | bus width 320-bit

** Unified Shaders (Vertex/Pixel Shader Units) : Texture mapping units : Render Output Pipelines

So I'd say significantly faster. =)

It's definitely a lot faster, but I guess the issue is with the price. $149 vs $340.

By the tone of your post it doesn't seem that you must upgrade now.
If that's the case, give yourself a favor and just wait until Dec.
It's gonna be a totally different market by then.

Well I'm using a slower Intel system now....great for internet use etc. but it isn't a gaming maching. Not sure I'f I can wait until Aug-Dec to fire up my games again so I may pull the switch on something soon just to play my favorites. I realize my AMD 3800 single core venice needs to be upgraded but hope to do that come end of July when the Quad cores come down in price. So basically need something between now and when I upgrade the motherboard. In two months time are the prices going to fall that much on the 8800s? I'm guessing not that much unless we see the 8900 soon.

The prices will start moving as soon as the 2900XT start flooding the market.
Besides, the 65nm version of the 2900XT will be a 8800 killer, guaranteed.
We'll see a lot of price reductions from Nvidia when THAT thing gets released.

It's already out.
It's been released 6 days ago.
The quantities are still quite limited, so is its effect on the market.

I am going to buck the trend and recommend pulling the trigger on a new 8800gts NOW. You may end up spending 30ish dollars more ultimately, but you will gain much more than that value in enjoyment. Look around, I think there is an EVGA somewhere for $329 AR. The BFG you linked to is another excellent choice. Those are the two best card manufacturers IMO, so you can't go wrong.

The improvement in gaming you will see by upgrading to this video card is bigger than any other upgrade. I went from a 7600gt up to an 8800gts and it was the best $330 I ever spent!
