BG2 or NWN?

When i first played Baldur's Gate 2 i was shocked, really. Such a big world, so much things to do. The history was good and the voice acting was complete and very well done. The quests were interesting and i found a lot of them everywhere i went. The combat was superb, very tactical, the kind of thing that makes you think before making any decision. The items were well managed to give you a worthy price for every quest. When i first played Neverwinter Nights i was impressed too, good graphics and a deserved overhaul to the interface. But i was dissapointed when i kept playing, it was all too shallow. The character generation and development was EXTREMELY simple, almost no useful items in all the game and a combat system worthy of a kid 7 years old.
It is so hard to make a game with IWD2 rules, as deep as BG2 and with a 3D graphics engine?
Are all new games doomed to be all about good graphics and multiplayer options?
I respect the opinion of all the people that enjoy games like NWN (here in Venezuela we call them "cybercitos", or cyberlings), but i would like to hear the opinion of the international hardcore RPG gamer, why do you like NWN or BG2 or IWD2?

I'm basically in complete agreement with you. To me, the Baldur's Gate series sets the bar for computer based RPGs. The story/voice acting/quests/combat system were all perfect. To this day it still stands as my favorite game of all time. I, like you, can not understand why a new RPG hasn't come out that could rival BG. Perhaps its because BG itself spoiled me? I enjoy great 3D games as well, Doom 3 was aweome, HL2, incredible.. but they still don't come close to the fun I had with the BG series... I never actually played IWD.. I heard it was pretty much BG without the depth in the story line (which, IMHO, was what made BG amazing).

KotOR in my opinion was amazing...I would've preferred a more interactive world though. I had such high hopes for Vampire: Bloodlines, because they had Source and a strong RPG world...but apparently they fudged it.

While KotOR 2 looks like it will be uber enjoyable, I think the next big thing to hit RPGs will be either STALKER or Elder Scrolls: OBlivion.

I loved Baldur's Gate 2. I played all the NWN games and though fun, yeah they seemed a little shallow. I think the move to 3D actually detracts a lot from the little details that made BG2 so special. Polygons just aren't all that realistic looking.

But no game IMO touches the RPG qualities that World of warcraft is starting to show. I realize it is MMO but it is where all RPG games will eventually be.

I tried playing BG2 but the interface (particularly items/equipment) was confusing and I didn't understand the D&D rules.

I enjoyed BG2, but I kind of liked NWN a little better. I never cared for pnp D&D. I also loved KoTOR. Absolutely hated IWD2. It had no immersive story like BG2.

Exactly! I played the BG series, and I found them to be much more fun and satisfying than HL2, even if HL2 is the best FPS of all time. BG and BG2 had a few NPCs that were quite memorable, like Minsc and his hamster, Jaheira, Imoen, and Aerie. For some reason, time after numerous times, I always picked these NPCs to be with the main character.

Yeah, the NPCs really made the BG series.. you really felt like you got to know them.. Damn.. you basically got to 'grow up' with Imoen as the series progressed. And the interactions between characters in BG2 was amazing. Whether it was two of your party members fighting or your main character was 'hooking up' with one. (I personally chose to hook up with Aerie my first time around )

It's not that NWN is bad, they just took BG2 and tore its soul out and replaced it with a 3d engine

That's the same thing I thought when I finished NWN

I'd really like to see an RPG that plays like the MMO's (WoW is a great example) but that you could play in a world with a small group of people... run a server and invite friends to join your adventuring as opposed to playing in a world with thousands of others. It seems like there is a lot you could do with a game like that, but I don't know what kind of resources would be needed to set up a server like that. You'd likely need a much smaller world with a lot less things happening and then you'd sort of be back down to NWN...
