Next year I am off to college and my bike is not going to be able to handle daily use(I doubt it can even ride period). I dont want to spend a whole lot of money as college is so expensive, so this sounds great. Can anyone reccomend a good bike they have at target. Also, reccomendations on a very good lock.

Thanks
Garrett.

mikecrof, check them again on Thursday. That's when they do the markdowns in that area. $79.90 is 50% off so it will drop again to 75%. Whether it will be this week or next week, I don't know.

No need to spend $1k for a good bike. Plenty of deals to be had in the $300-600 range that are great values. Yes, I know some people can't afford a good bike. Others buy cheap bikes for their kids, knowing that the bikes will be abused, stolen and just plain outgrown within the year. Realistically though, if you plan to ride a bike regularly and plan to own it for more than a year, get something better than what department stores offer. Fact of life - cheap bikes will fall apart, usually within a year or two. Good bikes (not even $1k+, but $300-600) will outlast your car.

Example of a bicycle hot deal: GT Agressor 3.0 for under $300, Agressor 1.0 for $400. This was about 1-2 months ago at Supergo. We're talking about Deore/LX quality parts and Judy forks on the 1.0 bikes. Both bikes have aluminum frames, not the cheap ones but ones that people actually use to compete in cross-country MTB races.

Yep! the markdown is today (thursday)! I went there last night and the price for the Pacific Elite 3.1 aluminum was still at $79.99, but today it's $39.99.

I'm sure all of them are gone now, because the staff actually tried to "reserve" some bikes for themselves, but I spoke to a manager and he got me one. For $39.99, I don't care if it breaks in 6mths Besides, I can have the luxury of just leaving it overnight at bike racks in campus, and no need to carry it up and down my apartment.

Actually, the build on this one is exceptionally well! pretty rigid feel and not too heavy.

Thanks for the heads up!

Nah, that Pacific Elite is everywhere. Like I said earlier there are a few other models but I can't remember them. I do remember that they had that Y style frame so scan away. If you see a Pacific Scorpio, scan those too. Those clearanced out awhile back but I still see them in stores.

I picked up one that I returned last year because of a problem. It was one of last years clearance bikes (Pacific Titan) that had an original price of $299 (or so the tag says) and I got it for $37

I saw three Pacific Elites at the Duluth, GA Supertarget in the racks this morning. Hell of a bike for $40 !!!

I didn't check child carriers for the bikes...no kids. They do have the Eddie Bauer backpack style kids carriers on clearance. They're with the the camping stuff and are down to 32.94 (I think) at some stores. They're tan/black and have this shelter thing that you can put above the kids head.

I've never noticed if Target even carries bike racks.

Just picked up the DV8 for $35. That almost makes it a disposable bike. It would cost that much to replace the tubes a few times.

This is the exact one I saw today in 24" and 26" model as well as the one jrgii posted.

Here's the bike info that I posted in the Target b&m thread. You may want to check that thread out as there are other items besides bikes listed there.

Pacific Elite we all know about. It's white/yellow/orange and is 34.94.

DV8 26" bike (don't remember if it's Pacific or Magna)
blue/red/white/black
dpc # 082 09 0007
$34.94

Magna XL2 24" bike
navy/maroon
dpc # 082 08 0524
$29.94

Magna XL2 26" bike
steel gray/maroon
dpc # 082 08 0526
$29.94

Don't know why the 24" and 26" are scanning the same price but who's to argue. Keep in mind that all of the above bikes may come in other color combo's. These were the one's I saw today. If you see the style/models I've listed regardless of color they should be clearance.

There's is also a Mongoose 24" bike 75% off but I didn't see it. I spoke to one of my friendly Target employees and he said it should be all blue. He said it also came in green. The only one's I saw were blue/silver and he said that's not the one on clearance.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC, Dynacraft Industries Announce Recall of Mountain Bikes Sold at Target Stores

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Dynacraft Industries Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 24,800 mountain bikes. Because some were not welded properly, the front suspension forks on these bicycles can break apart during use, resulting in serious injury to the rider. Dynacraft is aware of 23 reports of injury to riders when the forks on these bikes broke apart. Injuries included a concussion, fractures, cuts, bruises, back strain, and chipped and lost teeth.

The recall involves 26-inch Vertical XL2, and 24-inch and 26-inch Magna Electroshock mountain bikes. The Vertical XL2 mountain bikes have model number 8526-26, were manufactured in July 1999 and have chrome frames. The Magna Electroshock mountain bikes have model numbers 8504- 90, 8504-96, 8548-78 or 8548-94, were manufactured July 1999 through October 1999, and have frames that are chrome and blue, blue and yellow, purple, and black. A label affixed to the frame near the crank identifies the model, and the year, month and day of manufacture. Another label nearby reads: "Dynacraft Industries" and "Made in China."

Earlier this year, Dynacraft Industries announced the recall of the about 19,000 26-inch Vertical XL2 mountain bikes manufactured the week of October 11, 1999. This announcement expands the scope of that recall.

Target Stores nationwide sold the Vertical XL2 mountain bikes from August 1999 through February 2000 and the Magna Electroshock from August 1999 through August 2000. Both model bikes sold for between $100 and $140.

Consumers should stop riding these bikes immediately and take them to the Target Store where purchased for a choice of a free replacement fork or free replacement bicycle of equal value. For more information or to receive a free replacement fork by mail, call Dynacraft Industries Inc. at (800) 551-0032 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday. Bicycles that have a label that reads "Fork made Jan., 2000" or "Fork made July 2000" at the bottom of the fork are not subject to this recall.

Well, I ran up just minutes before closing, and bought the white/orange Pacific 3.1 Elite for $43.45 (after tax). They have one DV8 left, and I could return the Elite tomorrow morning and do an exchange and save $5. The person who was (quickly) answering my questions said I might want the rear-suspension of the DV8. Of course, she recommended a specific store that does much better bikes at decent prices, but considering how much/where I would ride, $43 is a better start than several hundred bucks to see if I really get into it (how many of us purchased an expensive piece of exercise equipment, or joined a gym, then utilized 10% of the actual value? New Year's Resolution breakers raise their hands...). Yes, a disposable bike at less than $50 can help make the big decision.

I'll be doing basic pavement and light-trail riding (like the Burke-Gilman Trail). The question is, should I stick with the Elite, or return and get the DV8? Five bucks means nuthin', I just want the right cheap-ass bike ;-)

chickachick, that's a very old recall. If the XL2's you bought fall under that category, then you bought some oooold bikes.

slugbait, the Elite is made with Shimano parts so it's actually a better bike than the DV8 but the DV8 looks better imo. If the DV8 is a Magna bike, stick with the Elite.

carmann,

how did you figure out that the Elite is made from what parts? I got a Elite for myself and a DV-8 for the wife only because the "bar" looks lower in DV-8, but now I am not sure if I need to get her a Elite too

On the frame near the back tires (or somewhere on the frame), I believe it says Shimano equipted. I know I saw it on the bike somewhere.

btw...Pacific bikes are made by Mongoose.

hehe a little research on the net showed that Pacific Cycle makes those Pacific bikes, also it owes Moongose, and recently it required GT and Schwinn

so does anybody feel ELite will be fine for 170 cm ladies too?

If that's her height, I'm not good with the metric system.

I'm 5'4" and bought a 26" bike a few years back. I'd have preferred a 24". I feel the 26" is alittle tall for me. My feet don't touch the ground when I'm sitting on the bike.

Actually, that's the only thing I've done with the bike I bought. I thought maybe I'd ride it and never did. It's been sitting in my extra room for about 2 years now. Boy is it dusty. So is the Scorpio I bought my husband.
