In 2016 Republicans introduced a bill to raise the retirement age to 69 and use chained CPI.
@pcGeek - how many examples do you need? I can do this all day.

Joe probably thinks he wrote a personal check.
Old folks often have scrambled memory's and say silly things, I just nod and smile, then offer them some ice cream.
Two scoops?
That was raisin bran. (although Joe COULD use the extra fiber I bet!)
Rick Scott's plan for America literally says they want all federal legislation to sunset after 5 years. That includes SS. Many, many Republicans have endorsed his plan.Four Pinochios.

This FUD has been passed around for a Long time and look it's still here.
You're not dealing with a decent intellectually honest or morally decent person. Proof does not matter time and time again with these people, and these posters show it year after year. They defend the worst of the worst in their party while occasionally saying oh this was a bad thing, but meanwhile defending the larger paradigm the Republican party works within, including supporting violence which they deny.In 2016 Republicans introduced a bill to raise the retirement age to 69 and use chained CPI.

I don’t think ‘they keep trying and failing’ is a very comforting response.Fine and none of these has resulted in nothing of significance being done. The most significant change was tying it to the Consumer Price Index and Inflation by Nixon.
I also think SS needs to be updated as things change in order to provide for future generations. I do not think it will be gutted or abolished. This FUD has been passed around for a Long time and look it's still here.
Meh, although he annoys me sometimes with the ‘it’s a secret’ thing he hasn’t done that (to me at least) in a long time and he seems like a decent guy. These people are irredeemable and are the enemy. Can't win a battle if you don't know who the enemy is

PCgeek will continue to vote for the worst of the worst in Republicans and defend their mission and what they're trying to do. Do you really think he's going to really stand up to the Republican party when he is basically always making up excuses for them and ignoring reality?Meh, although he annoys me sometimes with the ‘it’s a secret’ thing he hasn’t done that (to me at least) in a long time and he seems like a decent guy. You may think I’m stupid for thinking this but while I have many faults I’m not dumb. We just view these things differently.
All the old people are watching Fox and local news, how exactly are Dems supposed to get a message to them?Partly the Dems fault though, for not pounding home the message that Reps want to gut SS and Medicare. After the abortion decision, it seems clear that these are not simply empty threats, but the Reps *will* go after SS and Medicare if they get a majority in both houses.
While I don’t like his views and wish they were like mine he’s civil and, unlike many people on here, is willing to concede a point sometimes. He’s also willing to come to a place where the large majority of people disagree with him and I like that.PCgeek will continue to vote for the worst of the worst in Republicans and defend their mission and what they're trying to do. If Republicans gain control this fall and then the presidency in 2024 he will be in lockstep with them when we become a fascist country. He'll find some other excuse.
I struggle with how people haven't learned this after years of seeing the same behavior. In fact the behavior has gotten worse and they continue to defend them for the most part, with just those minor exceptions while still backing the macro behind the party. Such as oh Paul pelosi being attacked was bad but the Republican party and media has nothing to do with it.
Give me a fucking break
Civility is your ultimate determinant but not what you support and defend and vote for, just if you do it politely. While I don’t like his views and wish they were like mine he’s civil and, unlike many people on here, is willing to concede a point sometimes. Anyway @pcgeek11 even if nobody else is a fan, I’m glad you’re here.
My wife and I are OLD (quite) and still dont watch it. You do have a point though. There are also campaign ads, although people tend to tune them out based on their pre-conceived ideas, but some might get through. All the old people are watching Fox and local news, how exactly are Dems supposed to get a message to them?
If you can look at the majority of the Republican party and political movement and tell me those people are ones we can compromise with, at this point I got nothing. However if nobody can talk to each other and compromise anymore we might as well just break out the automatic weapons and start shooting each other. (which appears to be incoming!)
And whom do you suppose might benefit from that turn of events?
It sure won't be me and you.
I think there is a rhetorical disconnect. If you think this is true then the appropriate response is not to be mean to someone on ATPN.Civility is your ultimate determinant but not what you support and defend and vote for, just if you do it politely.
Let me tell you of all the shitty populations in history, let's use the Nazis do you think they all walked around being uncivil as they became part of the movement? Hell fucking no. That's how these people get underestimated and overlooked. Oh Joe down the street could never part of a fascist movement, he's just a nice guy always ask how our day was. That's how the majority of Nazis were to their neighbors. Civil, and even kind of nice. If that's all it takes to fool democrats that these people can't possibly support such a shitty movement, I find that sad. Literally history is taught us those are exactly the people that are needed to go along with the worst instincts of humanity. Has happened time and time again.
I mean tell that to a lot of Jews in Germany, whose civil and nice neighbors were now turning them in, or pro democracy Italians during Mussolini's reign, or those in the south during the Confederacy because most did not assist the right cause and just cause. Can apply this to every shitty movement in history.
I have no idea why people can't apply to this one.
Fascists authoritarians don't walk around kicking puppies. A lot of them have puppies, they have bake sales, they coach kids sports. If you think the only way to tell if fascist apart from a regular person it's just because they act civil now, that's just bad
I mean yes let's be nice to mid-stage Nazis.I think there is a rhetorical disconnect. If you think this is true then the appropriate response is not to be mean to someone on ATPN.
Couldn’t you just warn your people by warning them?I mean yes let's be nice to mid-stage Nazis.
The only time I've ever seen one of these conservatives make any kind of substantial change of heart is blackangst refusing to vote for election deniers.
So all these years of your politeness and that's it.
At some point you have to warn your people how fucked up these people are. And you're not going to do it by saying, hey thanks for being nice while you deny the Republicans are authoritarian and fomenting violence or about their plans to dismantle key programs like social security and Medicare and education, and keep voting for them.
Me too. I'm glad you are both here. Liberals and conservatives have different moral concerns, or rather conservatives have more concerns than liberals do but both value justice and equality even if for liberals those are really their central values. So, generally speaking there is common ground that can be found, I believe. While I don’t like his views and wish they were like mine he’s civil and, unlike many people on here, is willing to concede a point sometimes. He’s also willing to come to a place where the large majority of people disagree with him and I like that.
Anyway @pcgeek11 even if nobody else is a fan, I’m glad you’re here.
Stop moving the goal posts. First it was "The GOP doesn't want to get rid of social security". Now it's "well they are bungling getting rid of social security so it's fine".Rick Scott's plan is garbage and isn't going anywhere. Can you imagine Forcing Congress to vote every five years to re-enact every law. That is laughable.
