Seriously, why do people even bother doing bicep workouts?

I do not want annoyingly big biceps because it gives you that stupid dumb jock look, yet tons of exercises involve upper arms inevitably (every pulling exercise).

Need to find shirts that cover the upper arms.

Because if I don't work my biceps I get horrible problems with my elbow joints from all my pressing exercises.

I love my arms, I don't do anything ot make them bigger on purpose but I like them. They could be a little bigger but oh well. I think there's something wrong with you...

Functional strength rarely applies these days. Some people just want bigger arms because it gives them the appearance of being in shape. It's the way most (uneducated) base physical fitness on. Rarely does anyone see your legs.

Depends what you do really for compound movements, genetics, etc. I have huge arms and do maybe 3 or 4 sets of curls per year.

It's idiotic isn't it?

It depends on your goals and your profession or hobby.

If you do manual labor, arm strength can be more important than leg strength.

What good is massive arm strength without a stable foundation from which to use it? Imagine using a lever with a fulcrum made of sand...

if you need a stable foundation/leg strength or not depends on the kind of "work" you arms have to do...

i know a wheelchair driver who does a lot of arm exercises... makes daily life much more easy for him...

Whatever, if he had real functional strength he would just drag himself everywhere.

That's horribly atypical and almost completely out of the context of what we're talking about here.

But yeah, if you are a wheelchair marathoner then big arms might be a huge advantage.

May be but let's add one old guys perspective. 3 knee surgeries in the 80's. I can do a lot of cardio but zero weights without swelling. So I've got muscle but not a lot of mass. Biceps= 16" flexed w/o pump. So am I out of proportion? Maybe but I work what I can.

FWIW: I'm in shorts year round and get "nice legs" comments often enough to believe that some women like what they see.

Bodybuilders, peoe who prodessionally focus definion throughout their body, fequently have issues building mass poporionately across the body, this is due more to genetics then dedication.

Unfortunately, guys with skinny legs will always have skinny legs, so you just gotta work with what natre gave you.
Now a person with a crazy definedbupper body and who also has a flabby undefined lower body with alot of potenial, that is always unfortunate the excercise is purely cosmetic

Dude, use a spell check. Half of that isn't even English, lol.

To contribute, if people were truly interested in functionality, they wouldn't be using ISOLATION exercises for that bulky upper body either. Big, puffy, less useful muscle... sounds like my dream come true /sarcasm.

I like having big arms. I think it looks good.

I really couldn't imagine thinking that smaller arms actually look better, at least when you're talking about the sizes achievable without using growth hormones.

I actually think they're too small, but shirts that fit in the chest are often tight in the arms lately and people tell me they look big. Maybe I've just gotten into the mindset where they could never really be "big enough". It's hard to be objective when you're looking at yourself in the mirror.
