Actually, Bible says universe will be destroyed (in order to re-create a new and perfect universe, including a new earth) in great fire and melting of the elements. So it wouldn't be against Bible really to say that's the same way it came into existence. Big Bang is neither anti- nor pro-theistic, it just describes the initial moments after the universe sprung into existence. Like most things in life, it is subject to your own world view.

Actually the Bible is fucking retarded.

Fixed the first part; the second part's point was to just print "name.txt"; I believe it's an ATOT thing to scream "republican.txt" or "spidey.txt" whenever something like this is posted.

It's a Phokus P&N thing, which became an ATOT thing

IMO, neither of your claims is baseless.

Alright then, not baseless per se, but claims that he's not backing up at all. We can claim whatever we want all day long, but it's totally meaningless without proof or examples to back it up.

What I couldn't get my head around was how the 4 forces were one combined force at the beginning. I guess that's something that shows up in the math and not conceptual.

Two independant clauses can't be seperated with just a comma (first sentance). Punctuation fail.

Yeah, well, you know, that's, just, like, your opinion, man.

EDIT: Also, if you read that in William Shatner's voice it would be at least as good as in Christopher Walken's voice.

While screaming at the TV I was urged to post this. "What do you mean there were particles? What do you mean there was mass? Why are you spreading such lies!"

So you come to your informed opinion about the Big Bang from watching TV?

I have a really tough time getting my head around this too, I kind of just take it as a given. If someone has a book or article that explains this in an easily digestible way I'd be keen to read it.

This is funny if you read it in Christopher Walken's voice....

 you are sooo right.
We now need to get Walken to actually record himself saying that in his classy voice.

Motion to replace all Morgan Freeman monologues with Christopher Walken.

You totally should have just made it a variable that FuseTalk can use to start a thread with, also just merge the different Spidey files.

$spidey = "republican_antiscience_antigay_antiatheist_antihealthcare.txt";

Do one on Phokus/sandumski/Craig666.

Might be JD50 or some similar name. Not too sure who it was.

It makes your brain hurt to think about these things.

What was before the big bang? Was it another universe like ours? What is beyond the reaches of where our universe has expanded/exploded out too? Are their other "big bangs" happening out there? Where did it all come from? Why were those men with blue hands chasing River?

*head explodes*

The words "before the big bang" don't make any sense.

Neither does the big bang theory, so it works, you know.

Topic Title: Big Bang - just admit we have no freaking idea

"We don't know yet" is a perfectly valid answer, you know. It's much better than "we don't know, so God must have done it" or "there are some things that science can't answer" because both of those answers make assumptions that aren't necessarily true.

There is a gap in our understanding at the first TINY fraction of a second due to the lack of a unified theory, and there is some friendly scientific controversy in areas such as supersymmetry and inflationary universe theory, but in general our understanding of big bang is damn solid.

So what created all that mass, what came before it or did it just magically appear?

The words "before the big bang" don't make any sense.
In science something precedes everything. Everything is cause and effect, so of course it makes sense--if you want to define it in a scientific manner. If you say nothing came before it you're tacitly stating that science cannot explain it within its own rules.

Time as a construct did not exist until the big bang. Like every other dimension, time was squished down to a single point. To use the age old analogy, grab a globe and follow a logitude line northwards. This represents traveling in the time dimension. Now move your finger along the line until you reach the north pole. Can you continue to move north? What's north of the north pole? Similarly, let's run physics backwards in time until the big bang. In the same way, once we reach the moment when the universe inflated out to the dimensions we live in, it makes no sense to continue moving backwards. It's a flawed concept, a flaw in our intuitive understanding of time.

In science based in a universe where time exists, yes, causality can exist and be defined.
If time also resulted from the Big Bang, you can't have a "before," at least not as we would define it, hence asking "what came before the Big Bang?" is a nonsensical question. You might as well travel to Flatland and ask the nearest denizen to point "up".

Edit: Drat, beaten to the punch.
