So I just made it out of the medical wing... and in the beginning of the docs I noticed I am missing a strength genetic mutation.

2 questions.

Does that mean I missed it in the medical wing and need to go back.

and

The next room has a big daddy with little to no cover... how do you kill them? whats the best way - they tear me apart. and no, I dont want to keep wearing him down and respawning.

Not sure about the strength, it's been awhile since I played the game.

For big daddies, just juke them. Lay into them as best you can and when they charge for you just sidestep. Takes a little practice, but it's pretty easy and the ones with the drill arms shouldn't ever even touch you.

You could always just avoid them until you are ready. Useful plasmids like the electric shock one helps a ton against those big dudes so wait until you get some plasmids and health upgrades. Thats what I did anyways.

Use the frost plasmid to freeze them for when you reload, it lasts longer than the shock. Later on when you get the crossbow, the trap bolts demolish them.

The first few that you fight can be some really tough battles, try to pull them into an area where you have something you can run around to keep them moving without getting stuck in a corner. You get stuck in a corner and you're at their mercy.

wish I had some of those... if I run out of ammo and cash, can I just return to a previous area to find more? does anything respawn (besides the random slicers)

My first big daddy I sprayed him with armor-piercing rounds with the machine gun until it died. As I recall, I used about 50 of those rounds before I ran out, then I spent another 100 or so with regular machine gun rounds. Used up a ton of first aid kits though.

Early on you really just need to run for cover and dodge back and forth shooting and covering. The big daddies get easy as you get stronger, but early they're pretty rough. I never had the problem of running out of ammo/cash so I'm not really sure how to help you there aside from saying that items on the ground do not respawn. If you haven't already, pick up the physical tonics that give you health for hacking and the other one that gives you eve whenever you gain health. With those two always in all you need to do is hack everything and you're always good to go on health/eve and should save cash not buying as many medkits/eve hypos.

As two people have said it already:
Eletric Buck Shock (explosive helps too)
Lay some mines, traps for him. Get real close when you will shoot that shotgun and if you have a quicker reload you'll have no problem taking him out.
Watch out for those that charge you, don't panick if you hit the ground. Just keep trying.
I finished the game on hard and I can remember that the Eletric Buck shot is the best one.

Oh, almost forgot, when you get that camera. Take lots of pictures of the big daddy's .Also take pics of the little sisters as the pictures give you health.

so wasting ammo can cause a lot of problems.....

anyone know if I should have all my tonics filled (2 of 2 atm) when I make it to the 1st station. Seems like I am on the "2nd" lvl.

That rivet gun is nasty, hard to dodge and it can one shot you early on.

Hypnotize another big daddy and shoot at a neutral one and let them fight it out. Then finish off the survivor with one or two blasts of electric buck.

Later on you can lay into them with the fully upgraded chemical thrower with the electric ammo and kill them with less than a full reload, and they will be stunned the entire time you keep it trained on them.

Electric attacks, especially with the shotgun were devastating. Think I only needed 3 shots from that near the end to take them down. The tommy's AP rounds, as well as the pistols, were garbage.

Electrogel is a guaranteed kill (you freeze him in place until he dies). With upgrades, you don't even come close to reloading.

You beat me to it. With the upgraded gun and the ability to make electrogel it became trivial to kill any Big Daddy.

you can shoot for the tanks on their backs, that will drastically lower their health. i would always hack any turrets in the area as well, as they provide a great distraction for about 5 seconds, which is just enough to blast away at the tanks to get their health halfway down.

This is super-sweet when you have a couple of hacked bots who can lay down fire while you have him electro-frozen. Doesn't take much electric gel at all with some help.

My general strategy is to follow around a big daddy until I find a terrain where I feel like I can get off some good shots with the grenade launcher before he gets back up in my face. This terrain also must allow you enough room to dodge his charges and grenades and etc and not get backed into a wall or corner. Inevitably he gets up close and in your face, and at that time I use the shotgun. Electric buck if I have it, exploding if I don't, and regular shotgun if I have nothing else. 3-5 grenades, 4 rounds from shotty to the head, then machine gun (preferably with armor piercing rounds) to finish him off.

The first few Big Daddy kills are very difficult...I found a combination of electric buck, armor piercing pistol rounds and armor piercing machine gun rounds did the trick...it takes a lot of strafing and dodging, so make sure to engage them in a wide open area so you have room to maneuver...I would often use crawlspaces and such to hit them and retreat, so that they would not have an opportunity to charge me, hit me with those bombs they throw, or hit me with their gun.

Once you get the grenade launcher, it becomes a bit easier...I typically would set a few proximity mines along the Big Dadd's path, and then stand back with the Grenade Launcher loaded...Big Daddy hits proximity mines, and then I hit him with a volley of grenades from the launcher...usually finishing him off with armor piercing rounds before he even has an opportunity to attack.

Once you get the chemical thrower, Big Daddy's are a piece of cake...the Electo Gel essentially freezes them in place, and as you can hit them with a constant stream, just stand there and keeping dousing them with chemicals until they die.

Throughout the game, I saved my ammunition for Big Daddy encounters...Splicers I would use plasmids and the wrench every time.

Combo of electric attacks and grenade launcher worked for me (saved my grenade ammo for the Big Daddys). The first few were VERY tough.

Armor piercing rounds, electric buck, grenades/prox and the electric sprayer all work fine.

Also don?t forget to take pictures whenever possible to get research bonuses.
