I'd like an LCD panel that:

1. Supports 1600 x 1200 pixels natively.
2. Supports 8-bit color (not 6-bit).
3. Has little (or preferably no) motion blurring or ghosting during action gaming (Unreal Tournament 2004, Half-Life 2, etc.).

Does such a panel exist? I'm not worried about cost.

He's looking to play fast action FPS games. The 2001FP screen is not even as fast as the 2005fpw. Are you sure this is a good recommendation for him?

Who told you tha? I had 2005FPW in my hands and I didn't notice any difference at all at fast paced FPS. Surely it's not a high end CRT but it is a great solution. And this comes from the mouth of a guy who was reluctant to go LCD till last year and didn't believe that 2001FP could be so good.

What about the smaller Dell LCD's? They don't have any response times on their spec sheets... do the Dell 1704's and 1905FP still have the older panels with the slow RT's?

1600x1200

either 2001fp (fullscreen) or 2405 (widescreen)
i use the 2005fpw but it is shy of full 1600x1200

but i'd rather have the widescreen than the 1600x1200 that the 2001fp offers. so i'd suggest the 2405fpw, thats what im upgrading too.

fast response time = 6 bit, slower response = 8 bit. it takes more time to render the 2 bits more, but they give much mroe vivid colors. i think sony and dell monitors are the best.

I have the Viewsonic VP201b 20" LCD, which uses the same panel as the Dell 2001fp. Looks great for BF2 @1600x1200, 1024x768 etc. No ghosting noticeable.

Got it for $518 after discounts from Dell about a month ago...

The 2001FP uses an MVA (or is it PVA?) 16ms 8bit panel. The 2005FPW uses a SIPS 12ms 8bit panel. Reviews I've seen that have tested response time have shown that the SIPS 12ms response rating is fairly close to actual, while the 16ms of the 2001FP's panel is more closer to 20.

2001FP is SIPS as well.

I cannot comprehend how people still get this wrong. The only difference between the 2001 and the 2005 is the backlight is a little stronger. The 12ms is just a more aggressive rating.

The review has "only" been out for 2 years.

Yeah, I think you are confusing the 2001 with the 2405. The 2405 has the PVA panel I think.

Probably. I don't keep up on this much, which is why I made my reply more of a question than a statement.

I can comprehend it just fine, why can't you? Thanks for taking a stab at me. Not everyone reads up on LCDs all the time. I think I might have meant the 2405 with the PVA panel, as wpeng said above. Who knows. I just remember Dell's 2001fp display using a slower panel than one of their newer models. Maybe they upgraded it with a newer revision. I honestly could care less. My point was, since everyone was screaming "2001FP!" and the OP had no set budget, maybe there was a better 16x12 display out there for his FPS games? If not, that's fine. I just thought I'd bother asking so he wouldn't have to go with a canned response (like back in the Radeon 9800 days).

If you want a quick comparison of in-game color (especially black), check this out for the 2001fp.

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=924183 (pictures about half way down)

I personally owned a 2005fpw for about 2 weeks until I give up exchanging it for 4 times, all having horrible backlight issues as well as terrible blacks.

Though, there is a new LCD on the market, the 204T and it's looking to be quite good at least first impressions. Here's some screenshots of the black (sorta) and some thoughts.

*Edit: And.. the 204T uses the PVA panel (same as 2405 I believe?)
