There are multiple different DVD-ROM drives that went into the X-Box initially. Some were provided by Thompson, some by Philips, and supposedly the newest v1.1 Consoles contain drives by Samsung. Each drive has different capabilities and some users have reported conflicting reports. Truth be told, try it yourself and thats the only way to tell. My Xbox can read all 4 DVD formats (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW) and CDRW, no CD-R whatsoever though. I have a Thompson drive and a v1.0 Xbox.

look for an xbox through the hole in the back of the box that has the date that matches the samsung. this isn't an exact science, however.

iam not sure what to make of that list. but after reading the 12 page thread,
samsung drive is the way to go just because it seems to play anything thrown in it.
How to determine if your going to get a Samsung drive defnately is a hot deal.

Something along the lines of looking at the back of the box
and read the production values or having to look at the tray..

Games are starting to get cheap, im going to have to pick up a bundle from bestbuy
with some GC's i have but I want to make sure i get a samsung drive just because
future expansion and what not.

Trying to pick the Right Xbox bundle comes down to dumb luck! The serial number doesn't help much with picking one of the xbox with the samsung drives!

Some lucky fewl in UK got his with a samsung dvdrom, and 20GB HDD (according to a thread on the X2 Forum). I just need a drive that will read CDRs! Yes, I got a thompson!

Most of the idiots claiming they got 20 gig HDs were reading the LBA number. Some guy said he got a 20gb drive. He posted pics and it cleary showed 10 gigs with an LBA 20xxx

Another good deal from the flyer. Bloodrayne is currently selling for $29.99, the flyer had a mail in coupon for a $20 Gift Voucher for Bloodrayne. This is good on any console version.

If I bought Bloodrayne using trade-in credit, would I normally qualify for the gift voucher? I got it and NCAA Basketball 2K3 for change after trading in a few older games this weekend.

<hope>I'm going to send in for my gift voucher tomorrow, but wanted to check here first</hope>

Not a Hot Deal per se, but good news nevertheless:
Since the introduction of Xbox Live less than 60 days ago, more than 250,000 starter kits have been sold -- double original sales expectations. The starter kit has been selling out in most locations in North America. According to data released by NPD Group Inc., in the first month of availability, Xbox Live Starter Kits outsold by 86 percent the number of PlayStation 2 Network Adapters Sony sold in its first month.

Interesting thing on the xbox live. I bought xbox live and was doing the setup on the xbox and it asks for a credit card number. It doesn't say why, so I called their 800 number. They guy said it was just to make sure your an adult for the contract agreement. I asked him if they will automaticly charge at the end of the year for next year and he said no. Then I get the confirmation email which states the following.

Welcome to Xbox Live?.

As a new Xbox Live subscriber, you are ready to enter the most advanced and
exciting online game arena on the planet.

Your Xbox Live service was activated on Sunday, December 29, 2002. It will last
for one year, until Sunday, December 28, 2003. That gives you 12 months of
unlimited game play on Xbox Live.

In 12 months, your subscription will automatically be renewed for another 12
months. At that time, your credit card will be charged for what is then the
current rate for a year of Xbox Live service.

Why? It isn't going to be less than $50 per year--unless you don't want to buy games for XBL, it doesn't make much sense to wait--

Oh, I already got xbox live, and am enjoying it. I'm just anxious to find out what they're going to be charging. Read easygoing's post, they talk like that everywhere. They're very careful not to mention the price, they always use wording like this

"At that time, your credit card will be charged for what is then the current rate for a year of Xbox Live service."

The $50 a year rumor was started by IGN when xbox live was first announced, and hasn't been confirmed by anyone.

Does it really make any difference? The Xbox will only use 8GB anyway. The extra space is only useful if you mod it and use it to store data, but if I do so, I will replace it with at least 40GB or more.

I found this odd too. However, my gripe was that we activated on 12/31/02 for my son, the email response said it ends on the same date as yours - 12/28/03!

While it is only 2 or three days (it isn't a leap year), I wonder why 12/28/03???

Anybody?

It was also announced for Gamecube and PS2 with additional levels. The xbox will still get the levels but must download them off of xbl.

Called a local EB store today and was told that Buffy and the other $10 games are now $25. Damn! And I could have gotten it yesterday if the store wasn't closed for inventory. Double Damn! I hope the price goes back down...

Hey all,

I was just wondering how many of you signed up for the extended warranty for your XBox. It's for an extra 2 years for about $50. It just seems like piece of mind in case I somehow do something stupid. I was just wondering how many of you actually did it and what you think of it. It says I have to decide within 10 days of purchase....so I've got a few days left to choose.
