Big Lots- Panasonic NiMH Battery Pack - $12.99

Does anyone know where to buy just the Battery adapters for C and D size? I have a ton of the AA from the last Big Lots sale. Anyone know if the adapters are safe to use? I'd be putting them in radios and my kid's toys.

These are the worst type of chargers as they can cook your batteries unless you discharge them first fully.

I just purchased Rayovac PS4 charger. It is fantastic. I no longer use the Panasonic charger.

I have the Rayovac PS-1 charger. You can keep the batteries in the charger all the time until ready to use. It's a longer/slower charger though, like 8 hours. This will get like 1000 recharges out of the nimh batteries, but it's slower. Do you think keeping a couple of the PS1s going all the time is as good as having the faster charger? I mean for having fully charged batteries ready? I like the one hour speed charge PS4 idea, but they cost a lot more than the PS1 does.

Yes, it is a smart charger.

I bought the same deal at BJ's. This is NOT a smart charger. Read what was scanned in. The charger must be unplugged or the batteries can over heat or explode. I charged the batteries that I got for 5 full hours and they were to hot to hold. I think I will only use this charger in a pinch - I think that it will shorten the life of the batteries. Lynn

Well, I read was was scanned in and it says "When charging Nickel Cadmium batteries with this charger, please unplug the charger after the times listed below; otherwise, the batteries may overheat"

NiMH = Nickel Metal Hydride
NiCad = Nickel Cadmium

Thanks for the info. Although I already have one of these (paid $20 after $5 MIR @ CostCo B&M) and an extra 8 batteries I think I'll pick up another from Big Lots. $12.99 for the charger AND 8 batteries is an awesome deal. No shipping wait or expense, no rebates, no jumping through hoops.

The Panasonic will do 5-hour charge regardless of the actual state of the batteries. If your batteries still have some charge left, then the charger WILL overcharge them as it does NOT monitor the state of the batteries. Also if the power goes out during the charge cycle, it will re-start counting 5-hours.

I have had this charger seriously overheat the NiMh batteries on me. Fortunately, I was able to unplug the charger before serious harm was done.

A really smart charger actually monitors either Delta-V or temperature increase and stops charging when shut-off condition is detected. Some of them also have fail-safe timer mechanism in case the detection is missed. A fast charger with only timer mechanism, such as the Panasonic, is NOT a smart charger.

Having said all of this, $12.99 for the set is a heck of a deal. Even if you were to throw away the charger, the rest of the cells and adapters are worth more than $12.99! I wish I had a BigLot nearby.
