SIT tones are the tones that precede "You've reached the number that has been disconnected..." message.
Telemarketing computers remove your number when they detect these tones.
Some even say that the first of the three tones is enough. People record them at the beginning of their answering machine messages. It only works when your answering machine picks up the phone.
If you want to manually zap an "out of area" call, you need to have answering machine software, so that when your phone rings, starting the software will quickly play the SIT tones or the entire "You've reached the number that has been disconnected..." message that you've recorded as an outgoing message.
Now,
it's hard to believe but in this day and age, there is almost no answering machine software that can easily play sound files as outgoing messages. I've tested
a lot of them and have found
only one that can do this easily and it's buggy.
It's
IVM Phone Answering and Call Attendant Software
I say buggy because it turns out the length of the outgoing sound message can crash Windows Me. If it's longer than 12 seconds, Windows Me crushes. No problems with exact same message cut to about 10 seconds.
(Actually, I found out that you can repeat the same message several times if you set this under options, so it will play the same 10 second message several times no problem, but if the sound message is longer than about 12 seconds, it will result in a blue screen crash for Windows Me only) Note that these problems are gone when I booted into Windows XP on the same dual boot machine.
Of course if you can find answering machine software that can play already made sound files, don't hold back and share.
"That's all I have to say about that."
