I would also agree that the sweet spot is somewhere between 4.7-5". I've had no problems using my 4.7" Nexus 4 with one hand. Typing with one hand can be tricky but possible, although I prefer to thumb type with both hands. Anything beyond 5" is where diminishing returns start to show. Any larger, such as a 7" phone Asus Fonepad would be laughable. I've used it as a tablet and its just too large to fit in anyone's pocket.

Customers also want sdcards or larger onboard storage... yet we're still stuck on 16gb phones with disappearing sdcard slots.

This isn't true really.

People on Anandtech (AKA the Smart, Spec driven folks) want SD Card Slots

Everyday non techies could care less about it. I've worked around Cell Phone shops enough in the past to honestly say this. (In my opinion). "What do you want in your phone?" SD cards don't come up that often and was very rarely a deciding factor in buying a phone.

Yup, the average person doesn't care about removable storage which is why they aren't as popular anymore.

I don't think the "average" person cares about an SD slot one way or the other. That movement seems fueled more by Google and devs who don't like alternate storage locations. And yet players like Samsung, LG and Sony still have models with SD slots.

Meanwhile, looks like the average person doesn't care about having a smaller screen vs. a larger one.

I find the LG G2 5.2" screen with the tiny bezel to make it fit in the same space as other 5" devices is the best screen currently out there.

Most people probably never use an sdcard in their phone anyhow. I like the option I guess, I'm all for consumers being able to expand storage themselves for cheap. I do not like Google's new rules for accessing the file system etc. For Samsung it's a check mark on the spec sheet when comparing to another competitor. Just like fingerprint scanners and the like. They don't have to be used, but they put it there to say "Brand X doesn't have this!"

Although I will say the fingerprint scanner has become a big thing for me. When I factory resetted my phone and didn't get around to setting it up yet, I realized how much I actually use the fingerprint unlock.

Yeah but I think you get what I was saying. Many features, a lot of people probably don't use them. The fact that they are there though is good PR when you compare specs.

Fine forget about sdcard slots, what about onboard storage? Why do phones have the same amount of storage as ones from 4 years ago. Cpu's are getting faster, screens are getting bigger, camera's are getting better, yet storage is at a standstill.

Because the carriers and others are pushing their cloud storage schemes, and (unfortunately IMO) many are falling for it. So rather than have adequate onboard storage (logical if you ask me) people are going to end up more dependent on data plans for cloud storage (completely illogical to me from a consumer standpoint- absolutely brilliant if you're in the business of charging people for data and cloud services).

Why are people with tiny phones so bored by their own choice all they can think to do is start threads like this?

The hypocrisy of people complaining whenever the topic of phone size comes up is hilarious - considering the microSD thread went on for five months.

Basically, it's only OK to talk about something if it's what you want?

Show me where anyone with a larger phone wastes their time starting threads like: "Itty Bitty Phones are Useless!"

Yet people who do like big phones invariably post in these threads rubbishing the preferences of those who don't, or justifying their own preferences.

And "you", as in the general sense.

They want you to pay more for the storage, whereas screen size and phone power is basically what sells you to the phone. Extra storage is extra money

Hypocracy not found.

A big or small screen is obvious to the user and the wrong one is detrimental to the user.
The absence of an SDcard slot is detrimental to someone that needs one, the presence of an SDcard slot is not detrimental to the user that doesn't use one.

The wrong sized phone is detrimental to a user who uses theirs one handed (too large), or who likes to watch videos (too small). The absence of an SDcard slot is not detrimental to the user who doesn't need one.

Right, so size is an issue but the presence of an SDcard is never an issue and the absence is.
Therefore sdcards should be standard.

This illustrates the hypocrisy again. A five month long thread on SD cards exists, yet some people feel it's necessary to repeat the same arguments in an unrelated topic.

Hypocrite much!
