Big problems with new build

Ok, here is my problem, I'm trying to build a computer with the following:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 (Stock FW F6)

Intel Q6700 (not OCing)

Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500 (2x1GB - tried populating yellow slots first, then orange slots- no go either way!)

OZC GameXstream 700w PSU (connected 24 pin ATX connector and two 4-pin connectors)

WD 150GB Raptor SATA

Liteon LH-18A1P (IDE) DVD burner

PS/2 kb and mouse.

Ok, here's what is does or doesn't do. . . It beeps at me once and gets up to "Verifying DMI Pool Data. . . . . . " and that's it! I have removed the battery to clear the CMOS and gone into the BIOS to set "Fail-safe defaults" and still will not get past that point.

The MoBo is sitting outside the case on the box so it's not a short. Using the stock HSF and it appears to be mounted correctly. In the BIOS everything seems to be recognosied.

Any ideas? Please.

Verifying DMI comes after POST right? I think it's the hard disk. Try reformatting and reinstalling.

I would go into the bios at the post and look for the memory voltage setting. Set it up to 2.0 or 2.1. If you can't find it, try "ctrl-f1" while on the bios screen to create a new bios section. Some gigabyte boards require this to adjust the memory timings.

Bobsled,

If voltage doesn't work, since you already have the rig on the bench, I'd suggest the following: before you re-format the HDD, try taking everything off the board except the video card and one stick of memory. Boot, see what happens. If OK, then switch your memory stick and try again, re-boot, see what happens. If OK, add the HDD, re-boot and see what happens. If you now have the original problem, I'd say it's the HDD, then re-format. If it's OK, keep adding items and re-booting with each item, see what happens each time. When you get to an item that causes a problem, that's the culprit!

Any conclusions?

My Gigabyte board supplied 1.8v (recommended 2.2v) to the PC2 6400 Ballistix, but the ram simply did it at lower timings (CL5)..

Yes, right after the post.

I suspect it to be the HDD. At first I had everything in the case and it got as far as "Press Enter to install Windows XP" at I pressed enter and it was as if I did even have a kb attached. So, I aborted the install and retried with everything on the bench and at that point got the dumb DMI pool problem.

Everything seems to be recognised in the BIOS so hardware seems to be good. I'll try the suggestion tho then reformat the HDD.

OT: is the AT server slow or is it just me??

Thanks folks, I'll post my findings.

Yeah, turned out to be the HDD. Because of the keyboard failure half way thru the windows install it corrupted the windows install on the HDD so, the MoBo wouldn't see the HDD as a new blank drive but also not as one w/ windows installed either.

Problem solved.

Thanks for you help.

glad your problem has been fixed.

Just curious of your impressions of the ds4? I am thinking of getting it myself but just can't make myself click the "buy" button.

Thanks.

Very nice. Lots of features. I will not overclock this setup, so not sure what she'll do in regard to OCing. Try to get the Rev. 2 (from NE) if you go for this MoBo.

BTW, I added an additional 2GB of the PC2-8500 Ballistix and windows shows as having 3.5GB of RAM. From everything I read, I was expecting only 3GB to show up so, the extra .5GB was nice.
