BIG question for Windows 64 users...

How do you like it? Are you using it as your primary operating system?
Any suggestion for those of us considering installing it?
Any current issues with the operating system that you'd like to mention?
Does it have Media Center capabilities?
And finally, do you recommend installing it or just wait?

I found plenty with the general "how's it going?" question.

I have no clue why it would have any more media center capabilities than XP.

Have you checked the driver thread?

Did you bother to download it and try it out yourself?

Its Windows XP with a Kernel capable of addressing more then 4gigs of memory. Nothing more, nothing less.

If work on projects that require more then 4gigs of ram (ie photo editing, video editing, or large databases) then go ahead and try it.. Otherwise your better off with XP 32.

NT has been able to address up to 64G of physical memory since NT 4, maybe earlier.

I've tried the x64. There's still a huge driver problem when it comes to your, per example, wireless usb device or what else you may have. Not many producents have released x64 drivers yet, so you're better off waiting. Cool system tho, looks pretty much like xp.... :F

Which is another reason I love Linux, 99% of the drivers are already 64-bit clean.

Well I'm somewhat impressed to see a real live wireless driver for Centrino, although it looks like B only at the moment. http://support.intel.com/suppo...ebook/sb/CS-006408.htm Linux mobile market share is still almost non-existent though.

What are the extra modes your driver supports?

I don't know about Linux off hand, but I can setup my OpenBSD systems as access points using some chipsets.

There are plenty of supported cards for OpenBSD too (B and G anyhow).

They still require a binary-only firmware to be loaded on init, but it's better than nothing. A friend at work just got a Centrino laptop so I'm hoping to get to see how well they work in Linux soon.

Master , meaning it operates like an AP, Repeater meaning it will forward packets between other wireless nodes, Secondary which acts as a backup master/repeater. And Monitor meaning it will capture all packets it sees from every wireless connection regardless of association.

Linux mobile market share is still almost non-existent though.

So? My laptop runs Linux and everything works including ACPI and PM and I use swsusp to hibernate my notebook daily.

in case anyone hasn't mentioned it you can't install windows media player 10. but powerdvd and i think windvd work just fine

1289 RC1 has Media Player 10 and Directx 9.0c included... coming soon to public preview.

Personally I would wait until final is released, as you will need to do a complete re-install when it is released.
When final is released there will be no support for BETAs, no patches etc.
There's no benefit of running winXP 64 ATM as virtually no software supports it.

For me it would just be annoying, but if you have time to experiment and like re-installing OS'es then go ahead.

I have a Dual boot set up with my old 32bit XP and 64bit XP beta.

I can't migrate totally to XP x64 yet as there are no drivers for my "Edirol FA-101"... But here is my experience.

Once I got the 64bit drivers installed, I found it a stable and very responsive system, more so than 32bit. All my programs newer than 4 years worked fine, but older programs tended to freak out due to total lack of 16bit support. I was able to get drivers for all my hardware except my "Edirol FA-101" which is very important to me, that's a shame. I Emailed Edirol, and they said drivers would not be available until XP64 is released (This makes sense, as Edirol never release drivers until they are 100% stable, they have built their reputation on this).

I will be getting XP64 as soon as Edirol get some drivers for it.

32bit programs show no difference from running on 32bit windows... but I've noticed that programs that have a 64bit verison do actually run faster... probably due to the better piplining and optimisation of the AMD64 ISA... not to mention the ability to use 16regs... I found the 64bit drivers to be more responsive than their 32bit counterparts (could be psychological, based on the GeForce drivers).

I know that 64bit apps are not able to use the old x87 FPU, but instead have to use the much more powerfull SSE units, I think that improves performance a bit.

Not enough software supports 64-bit, so it won't run at all on Win64. No comments on when they will. I installed it and then went back to Win32.
