Big Win2k Pro Problem

Hi,

I'm running Win2k Pro & SP1.

When I boot up my system, I get the follow error:

Win2k could not boot because the following file is missiing or corrupted:

/Winnt/System32/Config/SYSTEM

Is that a universal file, as in I can get it from any other Win2k system, or is it a unique file? Please help. What do I need to do to fix this problem without having to reformat?

You missing the file name All you told us was the path.

"SYSTEM" is the file name.

As Mr. Mackey would say, "That's bad, umkay." You're missing the hardware portion of your registry. Most definitely unique to that machine unless you have access to an identical hardware config.

Hope you have an emergency recovery diskette. :Q There should be a SYSTEM.ALT backup in the same directory...you can try copying it to replace the SYSTEM file (easy if Win2k is on FAT32, otherwise you'll need to use the recovery console).

Failing those options, try repairing the installation from the CD.

Good news - the problem is fixed. I took my system drive and put it into another system that was running Win2k. I did that so I could copy the files from /winnt/repair. and then come back and run Repair off the CD. During bootup, WIn2k on the second system scanned my system drive and found missing and corrupted files. It automatically fix the files.

The original problem was a number of system files that Win2k required to boot was there, but the system did not recognize them for some reason.

It's funny how Win2k screws up and then come back and fixes the problem. Two thumbs up for MS.
