Today after I defragged my hdd with norton speedisk for win me, I rebooted into my Windows XP OS. Now when it starts up it tells me there is a serious error and prompts me to report it to MS, I say ok. Then I noticed everything is fine, but my deskop is back in the Classic theme. No more 'Luna' XP Theme. I tried rebooting several times, no difference. Now when I go to the display properties, it now only shows me 'windows classic' option and nothing else. Anyone know how to get the default XP theme back and what went wrong ?. Thanks

how about also trying to repair the installation. in my past experiences with win2k, i'd suggest you boot off your OS disk from your BIOS and then it should give you a repair installation option.

Hi BJC112, thanks for the advice. I tried that, but I still am stuck in classic theme mode. Any other tips ?

MNKYSPNK5W, I've done that before on my win 2k, but usually it just gives me a dos prompt.

Also I would like to state, that everything in the OS is working fine and all my applications are ok, it's just I have only 1 theme choice.

I've never thought I'd say this, but I miss my bloated XP Luna Theme

Go into the control panel, and administrative tools, services. Make sure the service "themes" (or theme support or something like that) is running and is set to start automatically. That is the service that allows you to use the Luna theme.

Hi Vetteguy, I checked out the service applet and it shows the themes service as started and is set on automatically. So that seems to be ok. Anymore ideas ?

Try this. "not for sure but here's some things"
use Bootvis from ms I believe it will let you see all that is being loaded you might just need a program load switch "i.e. luna dll prior to norton.dll"
Msconfig as well.. disable all that is not required "you can put them back one by one later if disabling them works"

SFC and tell it to verify or replace all files
type sfc /? for command line structure
You should be able to run RESTORE on the drive to prior point b4 this happend. if this doesn't fix it then the file itself "****.dll is likely corrupt
try www.tgtsoft.com themexp "this is shareware but if this doesn't bring back Luna type themes it might require more work"
after uninstalling tgtsofts themexp if it doesn't work try booting to Xp cd and act like you are going to REINSTALL. but at some point it will ask you if you want to REPAIR the current installation. this takes some time and is AKIN to a full install however in the times i have done it i've not lost any personal data or bookmarks.. only the OPERATING SYSTEMS settings sometimes get overridden. this SHOULD fix darn near any problem.
If this doesn't work I'm not sure what else to try.
SFC should verify the files and replace them from DLLCACHE should one or two not be correct.

Good luck hope this gives you some leads.

In display properties under themes select windowsxp. Its that simple . Really surprised no one mentioned that in there posts, duh. Right click on an empty area of your desktop to get to display properties.

After reading your post about luna theme again i see that the problem is that it is not listed in the display properties. System restore would be a good option if your themes are missing. I think i will stop posting in forums without the ability to edit, makes me look stupid.

Popeye44, thanks for all the advice. I have tried everything you suggested except the reinstallation/repair method of the os. I guess that is my last choice.

McFear, you can click on edit on the right hand side next to your message to change it if you'd like. Hth
