the MW3 hate thread got me thinking bout games that i was disappointed with. so i figured i'd make a thread asking what people's most disappointing games of all time were. i can think of a few off the top of my head.

1. Mario Kart 64

after the masterpiece that was the SNES version, this game was such a pile of shit. the fastest cc class in that game felt like 50cc class in the SNES version. they removed the whole jumping/sliding mechanic and replaced it with this stupid ass sliding mechanic that took about 30 seconds to master. the game had absolutely no sense of speed and it took about 2 hours to master the entire game, whereas the skill and precision needed in the SNES version was nowhere to be found. it seems this series has continued to take the same route by dummying down so much in it and making it extremely casual friendly.

2. Super Mario Sunshine

after what is agruably the best game of time, Mario 64, to be so excited for the sequel, and get something as shitty as Mario Sunshine ... wow, what a downer. it barely had anything in it that made Mario 64 so awesome, and went a totally whacky direction with having the water jet attached to mario. this game just had no charm and had some really frustrating controls and parts in general.

3. Gears of War 2

after anticipation from the first game, the bug ridden experience that was Gears 2 was just awful. the single player and multiplayer were just so filled of bugs that i stopped playing this game very quickly. the only saving grace to this game was bringing on horde mode, which now seems to be a standard in multiplayer shooters.

4. MGS4

well i can't say i was too disappointed with this, because i didn't expect much after part 2 (never played part 3, but hear it's great), but even then it was just terribly disappointing. after all the hype built up on that game, it was just a slow boring monotonous game that suffered from clunky and awkward controls. i never got around to finishing it, stopped at act 4. just didn't find it fun and it was more of a chore to play than anything, and the pace of the game was just awful w/all the long cutscenes in between.

Funny thing is those are all pretty good games in their own right, just expectations were SO high for them. Despite their flaws I still really loved the first three. MGS4 was absurd though.

More recently, I'd definitely say homefront is a big one. The concept was great, but the execution was just way off.

Dragon age 2 was a serious downer. The game took place in a single town and they just rehashed dungeons over and over.

And let us not forget the debacle of Metroid: other M. They've seriously tarnished the brand with this garbage.

Resident evil 5. Wtf happened here? They took survival horror and made it into a poorly controlling third person action game, that wasn't scary and didn't have good action. It was a bad game in it's own right, and coming off RE4 made it even worse.

FF13 was a pretty big mess too. I couldn't play it for more than an hour. Like most of the other disappointments they just lost their soul and forgot what the series was about.

Gran turismo 5 wasn't a terrible game when you actually got behind the wheel, but the interface was so cryptic an convoluted that it was so difficult just to play it. Load times were atrocious...we waited like 5 years for this??

Going a little further back wind waker was a huge disappointment. I loved the art style - hated all the boring sailing and how obviously the game was cut short and rushed.

A few others from days past:
Devil May Cry 2
Every Starfox since 64
Doom 3
Quake IV
Battlefield Vietnam
Deus Ex 2
Daikatana

Tribes 2
I don't remember much about it, but I loved Tribes 1 and all the mods/scripts.

There was a mortal kombat "story" game for snes somewhere in there too that was just awful.

Half Life 2

What the Fuck? How is this linear corridor shooter, with gimmicky physics, a Bland, Shallow, Generic story(Aliens Invade Earth! again...), and Horrible gameplay at the top of almost every pc gamers' list? It's Shit! You paid 50$ for the game in 2004 and now you're paying 20$ every few years for more DLC? Excuse me episodic content. It's like whatever valve does no matter how shitty is always excused by the goddamn fanbase. But as soon as another developer does it it's scorned! And don't get me started on the countless retconning. Retcons are why I don't read American Comics anymore. One Issue the main character dies. The next it never happened!

I don't think Half Life 2 was a letdown, but I do sort of agree with you. It is a linear corridor shooter with virtually no story. The physics were good although the physics/gravity gun puzzles do get old after a while.

I don't consider it a bad game but the people who say it's the best game ever are wearing their nostalgia goggles.

It was pretty unique for it's time. Back then those physics were unheard of. The gameplay videos shown before release blew people's minds more than the BF3 ones are today. I think anyone who was let down by HL2 is in pretty small company.

Yeah. I mean that was really a bland game. I never really bought the hype though because of how unwilling they were to show off the actual game for the longest time. All the hype was built off of prerendered trailers.

Zelda Majora's Mask was pretty disappointing to me. After playing through Ocarina of Time about three times and enjoying every second of it, I couldn't play through Majora's Mask.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
WORST STORY EVER. tried to play through it but the story was TEDIOUS AND BORING. there's like 10 people in the entire game you can talk to and only two of them have names. ABSOLUTELY ZERO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

Super Mario Kart
I dunno why anyone would play this game when the cars in F-zero go like a million times faster. BTW the story also sucked in this game!!!!

Golden Eye 007
The lack of online play really killed this game. What was Nintendo thinking????

Super Mario Galaxy
You would think going from super mario WORLD to super mario GALAXY would mean BIGGER LEVELS

Sim City 1 through 2000
The story in this game sucked also.

Final Fantasy 2
false advertising

Assassin's Creed 1. Although they eventually made up for it with AC2

AC1 was a very short game with an incredible amount of padding. Once you complete the first assassination, you've essentially seen all there is to see. Everything else is just filler. Not to mention the story was dull and Altair was a terribly flat character. Combat also sucked balls. AC2 more than made up for it though. It's unusual that the sequel far outclasses the original.

-The Force Unleashed: So much potential, yet it ended up as a clunky God of War clone.

-Bayonetta: A lot of people raved about this game. She's Sarah Palin in knee high boots. Got bored of it real quick though.

-Sonic 4: They screwed up the jumping mechanic. How does that happen?

-Lock On: Modern Air Combat: So many people told me this was the best ever modern flight combat sim. The game came out in such an unfinished state, it was unplayable.

God, I hope you're trolling. If so,

If not, please don't reproduce.

What? Afraid I'm going to pass down the art of MIND BLOWINGLY ASTUTE observation to my kids? Like how Super Metroid is the EXACT SAME GAME as Metroid? Or how the gameplay in Tetris is horribly one-dimensional (high hopes for Tetris for 3DS tho - heard it'll add at least two more dimensions of gameplay).

But yes, being facetious. Video gamers have an inexplicable need to vehemently defend their views on what games are good and what games suck (myself included). If video gamers were world leaders, World War 3 would be about which Final Fantasy was the best.

I'll keep mine to recent games because I don't remember old games I didn't like:

LA Noire:
Reviews were great so I got it immediately, and while the face tech was very impressive I didn't like it. Story was pretty boring and predictable, and the whole "lie detection" thing was a nice idea poorly executed. Finding clues is just a matter of wandering around till you hear a chime... no real thought behind. I'm wondering if my copy was just missing the $100 bill that came in everybody elses copy because I just don't get the praise.

Resistance 2:
Generic shooter with standard 2 weapon limit. Barely put in a few hours before I shelved it. Never played 1 and won't play 3.

Killzone 2:
Another generic shooter, but with worse controls than other generic shooters. PS3 shooters aren't special in the least.

The entirety of Playstation Move:
I bought it like a sucker and was immediately impressed with the sports game. Here we are a year later and nothing decent has come from it. I hear Killzone 3 was good with it, but who cares? So I can play a generic shooter in a gimmicky way? No... I should have known better.

you sure you aren't getting resistance 2 mixed up with another game? you can hold over 12 weapons at once in resistance 3, i don't remember resistance 2 but i'm assuming it is the same.

still really have no clue how people can call resistance generic ... really baffles me. it has the most variation in any FPS i've ever played.

Resistance 2 felt like a second rate game when I played it, about the same quality level as homefront. Couldnt finish it. Functional but clearly not the top of the heap. Never played the first.

Positive. Fans of the first one didn't like the 2nd one because of this (and other) changes, which apparently they tried to fix in 3. I didn't know this at the time though and thought 2 would be good.

Regardless... the damage was done and I don't feel like going back to the series.

FF13 and Fable 3 are at the top of my lists. I don't even want to play them past the first couple hours.

i just remembered 2 more..

1. Brute Force (on original xbox)

it was supposed to be the halo killer and it was 100% total ass multiplayer. such a bad game.

2. Haze

another one that was supposed to be a halo killer, but on ps3. i remember when the demo came out how underwhelming it was and how much people shitted on it. pretty sure the game sold terribly too.

Showing my age a bit here, and I'm surprised nobody mentioned it yet, but I'd say Pac-Man for Atari 2600. My buddy got it for Christmas, I didn't have a 2600, instead I had an Intellivision.

So he calls me on Christmas day to come play it, I go running up the street to his house all breathless. And it sucked, it didnt look or sound like the arcade version. Also it ran slower than Hell.

Funny part was that for years afterwards, even up to maybe 5 years ago, anytime someone was supposed to be playing a video game in a TV show or movie they used the sound effects from the 2600 version of Pac-Man.

Spore was a bit of a dissapointment as well, but that may have been just because I got all the way to the space stage before I figured out it wasn't my kind of game.

I bought Deus Ex:IW for Xbox and thought it was atrocious. Being a PC gamer first I couldn't get past the terrible framerates, textures, and washed out color scheme.

I must have started a game at least 5 times only to quit less than an hour in.

Sonic 4 was a bit of a let down. The physics are really off compared to the original Sonic games.

Shadow Man looked like such a cool game, but my god the graphics were so terrible and the controls so damn clunky. I gave up on it after about an hour.
