the MW3 hate thread got me thinking bout games that i was disappointed with. so i figured i'd make a thread asking what people's most disappointing games of all time were. i can think of a few off the top of my head.
1. Mario Kart 64
after the masterpiece that was the SNES version, this game was such a pile of shit. the fastest cc class in that game felt like 50cc class in the SNES version. they removed the whole jumping/sliding mechanic and replaced it with this stupid ass sliding mechanic that took about 30 seconds to master. the game had absolutely no sense of speed and it took about 2 hours to master the entire game, whereas the skill and precision needed in the SNES version was nowhere to be found. it seems this series has continued to take the same route by dummying down so much in it and making it extremely casual friendly.
2. Super Mario Sunshine
after what is agruably the best game of time, Mario 64, to be so excited for the sequel, and get something as shitty as Mario Sunshine ... wow, what a downer. it barely had anything in it that made Mario 64 so awesome, and went a totally whacky direction with having the water jet attached to mario. this game just had no charm and had some really frustrating controls and parts in general.
3. Gears of War 2
after anticipation from the first game, the bug ridden experience that was Gears 2 was just awful. the single player and multiplayer were just so filled of bugs that i stopped playing this game very quickly. the only saving grace to this game was bringing on horde mode, which now seems to be a standard in multiplayer shooters.
4. MGS4
well i can't say i was too disappointed with this, because i didn't expect much after part 2 (never played part 3, but hear it's great), but even then it was just terribly disappointing. after all the hype built up on that game, it was just a slow boring monotonous game that suffered from clunky and awkward controls. i never got around to finishing it, stopped at act 4. just didn't find it fun and it was more of a chore to play than anything, and the pace of the game was just awful w/all the long cutscenes in between.
Funny thing is those are all pretty good games in their own right, just expectations were SO high for them. Despite their flaws I still really loved the first three. MGS4 was absurd though.
More recently, I'd definitely say homefront is a big one. The concept was great, but the execution was just way off.
Dragon age 2 was a serious downer. The game took place in a single town and they just rehashed dungeons over and over.
And let us not forget the debacle of Metroid: other M. They've seriously tarnished the brand with this garbage.
Resident evil 5. Wtf happened here? They took survival horror and made it into a poorly controlling third person action game, that wasn't scary and didn't have good action. It was a bad game in it's own right, and coming off RE4 made it even worse.
FF13 was a pretty big mess too. I couldn't play it for more than an hour. Like most of the other disappointments they just lost their soul and forgot what the series was about.
Gran turismo 5 wasn't a terrible game when you actually got behind the wheel, but the interface was so cryptic an convoluted that it was so difficult just to play it. Load times were atrocious...we waited like 5 years for this??
Going a little further back wind waker was a huge disappointment. I loved the art style - hated all the boring sailing and how obviously the game was cut short and rushed.
A few others from days past:
Devil May Cry 2
Every Starfox since 64
Doom 3
Quake IV
Battlefield Vietnam
Deus Ex 2
Daikatana
