Warhammer : Age of Reckoning

I followed this release so closely even tried to get real life friends in on it to form a guild. Those silly podcasts that trickled info to us. The crafting system, PQs, world PVP.

Warhammer was the equivalent of a rebound girl. You leave WoW for WAR but its only a fling. I'm still out of WoW and if Blizzard knew any better they would start working on their next major mmo.

Last year I got orange box, and I have played and enjoyed every penny of it. Still playing TF2.

I played and beat the following this year:

Portal
HL2
HL2 e 1
HL2 e 2
Prey
GTA 3
Bioshock
Peggle Deluxe
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes Opposing fronts

All excellent games

Can't say I'm looking forward to much for 2009. A big part of me wants to break down and come back to WoW for WOTLK, but I know the formula all to well

To me, "biggest disappointment" is a lot like "Most Valuable Player"; it really depends on the definition you're using of 'valuable', or in this case 'biggest'. To that end, I offer this:

• If your definition of 'biggest' is "affected the most people" then the winner is Spore. It's been a while since a mainstream game was so over-hyped.

It was buggy, unplayable, never should have left Beta, made deceptive promises on its box, didn't ship with the majority of promised features, patches don't address serious issues, the EULA and TOS allow Funcom to ban you from the game for saying anything negative, community and forums were atrocious (mainly due to unbalanced moderation), and the list goes on. It hasn't been a good year for MMO's with Warhammer not meeting expectations, Tabula Rasa announcing shutdown, Lich King being just MOTS, and Hellgate lasting just a matter of weeks, but nothing in PC gaming or gaming in general comes closing to matching the utter fail that is Age of Conan.

just to linger on this a bit longer:
spore sales: somewhere around 2.5 million
conan sales: 700k in june, then ???

i'm willing to say the cumulative disappointment experienced by conan's players is greater than that experienced by spore's players. i have no interest in spore, but whatever it is, conan has to be at least 10x worse. honestly, if the box says "hardcover book included" are you out of line for expecting to find a hardcover book inside? this is just one of many many things truly bogus about funcom / age of conan.

Fallout 3 : Its certainly not the worse game that has come out, but given that it was suppose to be the best it falls very short of expectations. I loved Morrowind and liked Oblivion and hate the route Bethesda is taking, although its probably making them a fton of cash. Its a good game but way over rated.

Far Cry 2 : I thought it was going to be alright, but I could barely stand it.

Age of Conan : Actually the game wasn't bad at first its just that as time went on it crashed and burned due to lack of any attention to world after lvl 25ish.
The DEVs broke the game with every patch I swear to god. I was in the 'best' guild on my server (Veneratio:Bane) and at one point everyone in the guild realized the game was crap and we all quit virtually at the same time.

On the otherhand...

Fable 2 was very fun albeit short, but I'm sure that will be fixed with a TLC like expansion and release on PC.

Gears of War 2 was a nice iteration on the series. Enough was newish to make it fun again and enough was the same that it didn't alienate what was good in the first place.

If you knew what you were getting into you wouldn't have been dissapointed. All of the other's have long cut-scenes. MGS4 is only for fans of the series. Hard to just get into it at the last one.

Unreal Tournament III, though released in late 2007, was such a huge disappointment that we might as well say that it was one of the big disappointments of 2008.

FPS fans who enjoy competitive, intense, fast-paced online multiplayer competition have nothing to look forward to right now. UT3 failed to fill the void left by the original UT99.

I think the console port thing plays a part. For example far cry 2 has many minor pain in the ass interface issue (such as how saves work and limited flexibility in weapons - ala no zoom). I think there are close to a dozen little things - nothing major - but imho the root problem is the game just has no flow or pace. It has the worse properties of an RPG (run here run back there run here run back there) very repetitive very drawn out - very annoying.

Yeah, makes me sick to think of waiting for MMOs, any game actually. Given that they lie, spin, twist, all to get you interested and get the $.

Warhammer, for me, is actually more than a rebound from WoW. It was kind of that at first but as a Shaman i'm having fun so there's no need to think about trying to have fun in WoW again. (i seem to want to keep playing MMOs though, it's the feeling of working towards a goal...maybe I should find something real to fill that need )

I had higher hopes for Hellgate London at the time of its release.

I really wanted a post apocalyptic RPG. I have not played Fallout 3 yet, but I plan to soon. I loved Oblivion so I most likely will not be disappointed.

COD W@W, but the game is not a dissapointment. The lack of planning, support, and total rip off the of CE edition. All the way around on this game, I feel like Treyarch has given me the stiff one-eye on.
I sure hope Infinity Ward develops the next COD game.

For me it is Warhammer online. It promised so much and had everyone thinking it was going to be the next great MMORPG. It failed to deliver.

I wouldn't really say the graphics engine is inefficient. I don't understand how people can call it's graphics engine plain , compare the visuals of the snow levels with those of any other game on the market. Crysis wins hands down.

Spore. I actually bought the full creature creator and spent hours with it. I was hyped it seemed so awesome. Then the game turned out to be a bastardized educational game with little to no realism/complexity. To this day I still have fun solving the harder puzzles in Logical Journey of the Zoombinis and The Time Warp of Dr. Brain. Spore just bored me. I was expecting a (at least) semi-complex evolution simulator. Thank you Will Wright for wasting $20 of my money and 10 hours of my life.

I think they are calling it an in-efficient graphics engine because it is/was damn near impossible to run it at highest settings.

Zenoth has it right. I never even played Spore but I've been reading about it for 2 years. Farcry 2 is easily my biggest disappointment. I've had this game for 3 weeks and I'm about 3 hours into it.

AOC seems like it was a letdown, but I haven't played it.

I have been very pleased with Fallout 3 and Grid.
