1. That is not a "Squat machine" it's a Smith machine.
2. Deeko, ATG squats have their place if you are looking for overall development but you won't see them performed at ANY competition and if you EVER lift real heavy you'll know that the last few inches before you lock out are where your hamstrings and glutes don't support the weight and it's held completely by the quads.

Try this for fun, get into a squat rack and put the safety bars five inches below your shoulders, now put on some weight on the bar, bend your knees and try to hold it there, it's actually harder to pause there than in any other place during a squat.

Yes, short and medium range squats DO have their place, especially if you are training for power. (it's also a quick fix to build up your muscle ligaments so that you can perform a proper squat).

Epic Fail.

Back when I worked out 5 days a week for 4+ hours I max out at 305 pounds
but wretched my right knee, no longer can work out my legs like that... stuck to a cycle anymore damage = knee surgery

(5' 10'' @ 145 pounds)
Current goal is 20 dead hang pull ups !

Any workout with weights that lasts more than one hour is counter productive.

Try leg presses, cycling is useless for your knees as its repetitive and always puts the biggest strain on the knee at it's weakest position (let me guess, you point your knees outward to try to avoid that? Not a good idea)

Ehhh...olympic weightlifting sessions training sessions tend to break that, but most of it is due to extended rest periods.

well all of it wasnt weights a lot (3/4) was endurance and cardio
since I was planning on enlisting with the USMC figured I would need endurance over being able to weight lift

What an idiot, never lift heavy stuff without a spotter, shit happens and when you have that much weight you can kill yourself, and also no chance in hell he could squat 600 lbs someone in the room has got to stop him or at least spot.

Yeah, you'll need endurance but depending on what you want to do in the military you might want to get used to carrying while walking instead of running or jogging with a full packing.

Back when i enlisted we had cotton backpacks on a steel frame, the worst part was that as you moved for extended periods of time it would make your shirt rub through your skin, so take the backpack you get and be happy that it's not the 80's anymore.

John, how much emphasis is put in weightlifting in the military (if)?
What kind of exercises?

Just wondering.

It's mostly carrying so it's endurance but a good core build will help you a sheitload.

Basic training doesn't include weight exercises but i do and encourage my men to do that on their free time.

Three things to think about, grip strenght, leg strenght and endurance, so deadlifts are a given in the weight room while things like bench presses would be useless exercise, i do them anyway to balance out the traps and lats.

I heard Terell Owens asked in an interview how much time he spends lifting weights. He said he spends maybe 45 min a day. And that dude is an absolute freak.

Well somewhere around 45 minutes is pretty perfect, that means max two minutes rest between sets and one minute for smaller muscle groups.

If you're on the juice though, 2-3 hours will work just fine.

I don't know who Terell Owens is though, is he some kind of local celebrety?

Hmm...so you're telling me that deep squats aren't in any competition ever, and that I'll find out these things if I ever lift heavy? Maybe I'll learn some day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb6MiR6WUVs

For the record, I didn't say anything about "ATG" squats - I said quarter squats are not good. There are far superior methods, which I described above, for working the top of your squat. Methods which don't trash your knee the way a partial squat does.
