Way to go Bill, but a little late in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I thought Bill Clinton was a really good president, but drug policy was one place where I thought he came up short. Instead of scaling back the drug war, it has escalated under his administration(probably due to the stupid criticism over his even more idiotic "I didn't inhale" remark). Clinton should have stopped that dumbass Drug Czar McAffry from increasing the spending and the continuing this drug war that has plagued our country. I think it's great he came out and said this now, I just wish his administration had been following his belief for the past 8 years rather than imprisoning more people and spreading more lies.

Billbo also says that you should commit perjury, obstruct justice, sell defense secrets, etc. and not go to jail either.

That said, the "War On Drugs" is a waste of time and money and a serious imposition on our freedoms. Drugs are bad, but the actions of the government against the people in the name of the drug war are worse. Decriminalize drugs and stop making the taxpayer pay to warehouse the stoners.

He's just now saying that? Throughout his entire administration Clinton, Reno had their goon squads have been busting down doors and arresting patients in California that were LEGALLY using marijuana. I guess he figures his political career is over, so he can say anything now. Fscking wanker.

dont you see though? things are really starting to change for the better on this issue. even though late into his career, a president admitted that mandatory minimums should be abolished, even admitted he tried marijuana.
Mandatory minimums is a very big concern of mine. basically you have to serve the same amount of time for smoking herb (in some states) as a rapist. for having a joint in your own home....think about that. the worst part is judges cannot be leniant on the defendents, even though most of them want to. the sentancing power resides with the prosecution..fat chance they are going to be leanient. judges have even resigned over this issue, families and homes were broken up, lives were ruined, all because of enjoying some marijuana in your own home. this country is so full of beauracracy that it will take 30 years for them to repeal something as absurd as that, much less legalize medicinal marijuana. obviously the next step would be to legalize recreational use.

<< You'd be surprised how many fvck-knob's are out there. Hell this forum is full of them. >>

Yep I can name quite a few....

This is some great news towards the dicriminalzation of marijuana. Total lagalization will never happen, so decriminalation is the next best thing.

If Clinton felt this way, I don't understand is why the Clinton Administration didn't change the emphasis from the War On Drugs (People) to a War on Violent Crime. They certainly had the power to allocate and reallocate federal funds. More people have been imprisoned for smoking pot during Clinton's administration than any other.

Of course, Clinton has always been hypocritical in this - "I never inhaled."

Here is the text of the interview that is applicable (for those who don't click on links):

<<President Clinton, who tried to avoid the stigma of smoking marijuana by saying he never "inhaled," tells Rolling Stone magazine that people should not be jailed for using or selling small amounts of the drug. In an interview with the rock magazine released on Wednesday, Clinton was asked if he thought that "people should go to jail for using or even selling small amounts of marijuana?" Clinton, who raised eyebrows in the 1992 presidential primary campaign when he admitted trying the drug but adding he didn"t inhale, told the magazine, "I think that most small amounts of marijuana have been decriminalized in some places, and should be." He added, "We really need a reexamination of our entire policy on imprisonment. Some people deliberately hurt other people and they ought to be in jail because they can"t be trusted to be on the streets. Some people do things that are so serious that that they have to be put in jail to discourage other people from doing similar things. "But a lot of people are in prison because they have drug problems or alcohol problems and too many of them are getting out -- particularly out of state systems -- without treatment, without education, without skills, without serious efforts at job placement." >>
