I think the point is that MS is making legit customers jump through pointless hoops. The pirates find ways around the Activation, and the legit customers get screwed. I had to type that stupid 80-digit Activation code several times just for one XP re-installation. Then after all those attempts failed, I had to read it off over the phone. Now WGA self-installed on my PC (it didn't tell me it was going to) so I've got even more crap I don't want, and MS is calling it's Notification (call home) tool a High Priority Security Update. Why the fvck would I want to install yet more spyware that'll increase my boot time?

Why does dealing with Microsoft always turn into a hassle for some people here?

Easy, yes, time consuming, yes, quick, wtf?

Why does dealing with Microsoft always turn into a hassle for some people? Probably because they are the only company we have to deal with this kind of thing? And yes, if you don't like it, use something else. Done and Done. I love my freebsd and linux machines

For you to think it's easy, painless, and quick, you must really be used to doing this crap.

I clicked activate button at first startup. Took 2.5 seconds for xp pro.

Only complay to d othis kind of thing? Have you ever forgotten your account or password for steam? I had a account for steam that I had forgotten the password to. Too bad the account was 6 years old and my email had changed. I had to buy all new software and make a new account. Stop b1tching about 10 minutes. It took me $50 and 6 hours to finish the last 30 minutes of half life and start playing opposing force.

Oooo! MS is teh DEVIL!!!

Yeah if maybe you pirates stopped screwing the software industry we could get rid of even cd keys and go back to the way things were. MS software is pirated like you wouldnt believe in Asia. Activation is a necessary evil to prevent the noob pirates from stealing MS software.

As a matter of fact, I am used to it. Alternatives to Microsoft involve installation issues and tweaking to operate smoothly also. The OP loses ten minutes activating his rig, but that much time is wasted waiting on hold for an answer from a offshore call center.

This often happens if there is a nut loose between the monitor and the chair. If that's the case, it generates id 10t errors in the software which causes this to happen.

i'll say this, that key won't work anyway. i have legit windows but i read that the FCKGW key is known as pirated and won't work. and just for that you should be banned.

He didn't take the picture. That pic's been floating around the internet for, what, five years now or something?

Anyway, it'll work to install but you won't get windows updates.

It's all about attitude. Some people just hate Microsoft, so they'll have a negative attitude about it no matter what. Of course it's going to seem like a hassle if you're pissed off about it from the get-go. It's a minor inconvenience.

So now you're just part of the problem.

I just built a new computer and had to activate windows. It took a few minutes on the phone and was painless.

Honestly, I don't like having to do that. But it doens't give me the right to steal software and gloat about it on an open forum. That's pathetic and lame. Be a man and switch if you don't like it. Now you're basically just a thieving lowlife.

The OP is a moron. Why the heck should Bill Gates DIAF because you can't install your copy of Windows XP. And why the heck do people always blame Gates for every little problem they have with Windows?

Bill Gates /= Microsoft

Get that into your head.

The real shocker here is that you want someone to die a very painful death because they supposedly slightly inconvenienced you for 10 minutes.

Does this mean that the next time you make a mistake and hold up traffic or a checkout line that I can break your kneecaps?

QFT!! About the most useful post in the whole thread.

I actually wonder sometimes how that agreement works out. I typically pay about $100 for fairly loaded P4 systems during the 'refurb' blowouts that Dell puts up every so often. Then you've got a copy of XP that can be installed/reinstalled, same disc diced up between any number of a bazillion dell units you've got if you want.

As for pirating..............

If I use my buddy's open-license version of XP and he paid for it....... It's kinda' like buying a dell except I can install it on a non-dell system if I prefer something in a different color.

As far as I'm concerned, the WGA is a Trojan Horse -- it claims to be beneficial in order to coerce the user into installing it only to find out it is harmful!

Also, the day (likely with Vista) will come when Windows will be subscription based rather than purchased. This will prove that "intellecutal property" is a marketing hoax becuase what today is "property" one can purchase will then be a service.

The way software is licensed is no different than if an automobile maker programmed only "approved routes" into your car's engine controls -- go off the specified route and your engine shuts off. That'll teach them.

Isn't this what Microsoft is doing to us?

I opt to not comply. I have purchased my last Microsoft product. From now on it will be linux or (unfortunately) Mac. My plan is to be MS-free within 10 months.

I bought a macbook to avoid microsoft xp/vista. OS X has its problems and stupid issues, but it's just so much better than anything I've experienced with microsoft.

I can't say I know exactly how WGA works.

My assumption is that it only works if you click on it in the menu and XP goes out and tries to check itself.......(before it "wrecks itself"??? LMAO!!!!!).........but I can't say it's not doing anything even before you do that..........(i.e., simply by being d/l'd during 'updates').

????

I would also HUGELY love to see Google go after an operating system!! I think that would be awesome!!! Except for Google having taken forever to finally convert the old "Deja Newsgroups" (I still miss the old Deja sometimes) everything else they've done has been pretty darn cool, imho. If they can come up w/ a descent O/S I'm all for it!!

Ummm... ok.

You don't seem to understand what intellectual property means. You're not buying intellectual property, you're buying a license to use it. Subscription-based licensing is already common, although for an operating system I'm not sure that it's appropriate. I don't think Joe Sixpack would stand for it, because he wouldn't understand it.
