Only if linux development ever ceases.

or if you ever decide to play games/ have to use any array of formats that linux has no support of.

I use linux a while back. It;'s nice in concept but a pos in execution. No flash, no support of a bunch of codecs, no gaming support...

No Flash for Linux?

Then what is this.? and why does their Product Manager say there will be a version 9 for Linux if it doesn't exist?

Games are irrelevant for me. I'm married, run 3 businesses, and own my house. The wife, the jobs, and the honey-do's don't leave much time for games. For the one or two weekends a year I get to game I can rent something for the Xbox rather than pay to own it for the other 360 days a year I don't get to play.

*shrugs* To each his own, but I've had Linux on my main machine for 3 months now and haven't missed anything.

eh. It's been a year since i've touched linux(Kubuntu build 4.5x or something). Besides, there still isnt any flash 9 according to thar article, wasnt the release date 2007(probably not a big thing though since flash 9 isnt required widely and flash 7 should work for the most part)?

When I was uning it, no flash support, I couldnt play a lot of my music(I get a bunch of free songs from sony connect in Atrac format and WMAs I ripped.), I couldnt find a decent game, I could barely use my ATi card, Installing things were generally a hassle, some webpages still require ie to load properly or at all, GIMP was no where nearly as good as Photoshop CS2(imho), etc, etc. Open source is a nice idea but most of the software is not in the same range as commerical software in polish or features or whatnot.

Only because it was given to me. (Besides, it is property I own and not just something I pay a bribe in order to obtain the permission to use!)

Why does dealing with Microsoft always turn into a hassle for some people here?

Easy, yes, time consuming, yes, quick, wtf?

Why does dealing with Microsoft always turn into a hassle for some people? Probably because they are the only company we have to deal with this kind of thing? And yes, if you don't like it, use something else. Done and Done. I love my freebsd and linux machines

For you to think it's easy, painless, and quick, you must really be used to doing this crap.

As a matter of fact, I am used to it. Alternatives to Microsoft involve installation issues and tweaking to operate smoothly also. The OP loses ten minutes activating his rig, but that much time is wasted waiting on hold for an answer from a offshore call center.

I take it you have yet to take full use of your windows installation?

First you need to define installation issues and tweaking

I have yet to meet ONE operating system which did not have any installation issues or tweaking required. Now...personally, I don't consider that a problem, I do what I need to do to get the job done.

to say that microsoft has never given installation or tweaking issues boggles my mind.

10 mins activiating his rig....I've lost close to 45 mins getting that damn thing activated, especiaclly when they fvck up on their end and I end up getting transferred to a whole bunch of different locations.

You fail at PCs

When you have an HP, Dell, etc. they have recovery discs (or partition) that automagically do the activation and serial number entering for ya. Even when they offer plain Windows CDs too (like Dell), they usually have something on them that keeps them from acting dumb.

Now, when I built my PC and had to reformat with the OEM copy that I bought from the Egg, I had problems

Linux having limited Flash support is a plus in my book. Windows 2000 will be my last MS operating system. I won't deal with activation or any of the other crap with people watching over my shoulder as with XP. DRM? Screw that. Add onto that the massive hardware requirements for Vista, and I'm out. I'll use Linux for productivity, and if I want to play games I'll buy a Nintendo.
