BIOS not retaining information

Hello,

I helped my friend to build a computer using some older parts. I managed to install Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18 KDE and both work fine. There is, however, one small issue: Every time the computer is turned off, the BIOS does not retain the information. BIOS reports CMOS error when computer is turned on and I have to press F1 and enter the BIOS to adjust the settings. After the BIOS has been adjusted, the computer works fine until shut down. When I turn the computer on again, I get again BIOS CMOS error. I already replaced the battery, but the issue still persists.

Info about computer:

Q9650 processor
Asus Maximus Extreme
8 GB RAM
7850 Radeon
Samsung 850 SSD

Any suggestions?

It's not my computer. I just help build it. I can't remember the exact BIOS error. I think it's a checkum error. When I enter in BIOS all settings (time, date, ...) are reset and I have to adjust the settings.

I can post more information tomorrow when I will have access to the computer.

Check the cmos 2032 flat battery. The battery is so the motherboard can retain any settings you set.

+1

Sounds like the classic symptom of a dead battery. Replace it with a new one (most pharmacies and hardware stores carry them. There are different sizes and voltages, so tell them to make sure the buy exactly the same part number as what's in their motherboard (most of the time it is a CR2032).

I already replaced the battery. I bought CR2032 3V battery, the same specs like the original one, but that didn't solve my problem. I think I will have to check the voltage of the new battery.

Bios might need reset with jumper for it to stick. Look into that. See if there are any BIOS updates for it, too.

Make sure the new battery is good and make sure it is installed the correct way.

Thanks to all for replies. As I said the computer isn't mine and I can only access during weekends. Here is the plan:

1. Check the new battery.
2. Clean the holder/socket of the battery. The motherboard is an older Asus Maximus Formula with socket 775 and there might be some dust which prevents contact.
3. Check and if necessary update the BIOS.

I have another question which might sound silly, but I would like your opinion: Is it true, that in cases like mine when the motherboard has not been in use for years is it necessary to leave the computer turned on for a day or two in order for BIOS to get "recharged"?

Thanks.

That doesn't sound like it would be true.

One thought is there is a bios reset jumper that fell off or is on the wrong set of pins. Look into where those pins are and where the jumper should be to NOT reset it and confirm that is how it is configured.

The cmos battery is not rechargeable. So, using or not using the computer will not recharge it. I thought the same thing for my old non-used computers.

If changing the battery did not fix issue, please update the latest BIOS for Maximus Extreme: here
Sometimes the BIOS chip is not completely have good contact to the socket, so please press on the BIOS chip so the chip pins have good contact to the connectors on the bottom of BIOS socket.
