Geil PC3200 400Mz DDR Ram

Bios by SPD detects Geil stick as 2.5-8-4-4 and CPU-Z reports 2.5-8-4-4

Label, Geil specs and Newegg description say it should be 2.5-6-3-3

Do I have a Bios setting wrong or what's going on?

Is performance difference between 2 settings noticeable?

IC7g
bios v17
optimum bios setting selected
2.6c
Geil 512x2 pc3200 400Mhz DDR (ones with blue heat spreaders)

Thanks

try 1 stick and see what happens. sometimes your system will lower timings with 2 sticks installed so they run together. You may need to manually set the timings in the bios. there will be a noticeable difference (only in benching- not real world).

This is nothing new about GEIL, their specs are in general fake and hardly ever keep up with the reality. So don't worry. At least the modules work in your board. They usually don't work at all in AMD based boards. For that reason I would avoid Geil as a plague.

bah!

i have geil gold dragon...

they are supposed to be 2.5-3-3-7 but i can't get them to run at that speed.

At spd, they show up as 2.5-4-4-8 but they run at 2.5-4-3-7.

Sometimes spd programing is weird depending on the board. Don't be surprised that it might be wrong.

As long as it runs at the speed its supposed, then that's all that matters.

There are some good ocz or corsair that don't even get detected at the spd they are supposed to.

just be happy they run at the speed they claim they are supposed to!

It does show in the bios 2.5-4-4-7 though.

Thugs is right on: the SPD programing is real flakey on 875/865 boards. Don't worry about what it says, just make sure your RAM can run at it's rated speed.

The fun thing with the flakey 875/865 SPD programming is when the board detects it as faster than it actually is and you can't even boot into the BIOS because the RAM is set too fast. You're lucky that yours is giving you the opposite problem.

Well, I set the bios to 2.5-6-3-3 and ran memtest86 v3.0 overnight without an error!

Thanks for all of the help guys. I continue to learn a lot!

Got a stick of corsair valu select pc3200 that is marked and advertised as cas3 ram but the spd says it is cas 2.5 and every motherboard i have put it in detects it as cas 2.5 so i guess where geIL goes one way and screws their customer Corsair goes the other way and gives you something better than they label it as.

They may just be doin the SPD timmings higher to ensure you boot up. I had a talk to a Kingston tech because all my hyperx would boot at SPD timmings higher than advertised He basicly said they do that to ensure the machine boots because all mobo's are different and some dont like tight timmings of the high end ram. then he said just change them to correct speed and if they dont work RMA them.

So I set em for propper timmings and fine they were. Geil is probably doing the same thing
