A trusted source of mine gave it a 7.5 on an uninflated scale. That sound too low to you guys?

Thats around what I would have given Bioshock too.

He told me to wait till it was $15 or so, which is what I was planning to do anyway.

As someone who wasn't really a fan of the first Bioshock, I'm enjoying Bioshock Infinite a lot more. I'd say it's 10x more interesting. It is really out-of-this-world.

PoolSize does nothing as it's a console setting. PC version auto-detects your VRAM.

This is interesting, because there are people swearing by it. I didnt see any difference myself, and I originally went to 800. Using hwinfo, gpu memory usage is at around 1.2Gb or so at any value, so I wasnt sure what this was actually doing and just left it alone.

I have not had any of the hitching that people are talking about. As I'm assuming it has to do with loading more parts of the game, it sounds like it has something to do with how it loads on slower drives. (Mines sitting on my SSD).

My game is on an ssd and I still feel it. I may actually try and increase my settings a bit. I'll probably be done by the end of the week, so its not a dealbreaker. Just a little annoying.

I'm only playing this because of the AMD Promo. I never really liked the idea of the first one. In fact, I have the first one on a shelf still shrink wrapped. I dont even utilize the powers all that much. Elizabeth keeps telling me to use them. I'm still having a good time with it.

I believe its an issue from consoles. You know how some games, like Darksiders 2 on the 360, will late-load assets, so you get that 'pop-in' of models and higher resolution textures?

I never have any hitch in the graphics at all, until I enter a new area with a scripted event, where the game seems to quickly try and load everything once you get there, instead of background loading the data before you ever get there.

The story and visuals are the high point of the game. The combat is almost laughably easy, especially if you are a skyhook master. The exploration is mainly to check every single bag/garbage can/item for cash, which gets old. And, with Elizabeth tossing you ammo and salts, you almost never really run out of anything. In summary, it's just too damn easy; no challenge really.

Right now, I'm thinking 8.5 out of 10.

Depends on if you like the combat. The game is beautiful, and the art and flow direction is by far the best I've seen in a VERY long time.

Those ratings confuse me. 8.5 seems way too high for a game you only somewhat like. This is why ratings are meaningless I'm reserving my ratings/review until the end as you said, the story is the highlight and can make/break a game (look at ME3).

Can anyone with a 2GB card give me their unaltered Texture Streaming settings? I'd much rather have the slight, infrequent stuttering than the terrible, low-resolution textures.

I'm not too far into the game, but my biggest complaint would be the somewhat lame enemy AI. There's been a lot of praise for Elizabeth's AI, but there must not have been that much time spent on the various baddies. There will be a bunch of cops in a room, and when they spot me, they will start shooting. I duck out of the way and they just keep shooting at where I was for awhile. Whether or not the enemies will come after you seems to be related to how far away they are.

How am I supposed to play this game? I explore every stupid bench and trashcan to pick up coins, and with a couple of deaths I lose everything. Should I just explore more and eventually come back to pick up the coins so I can buy vigors?

What do you mean, "lose everything"? I don't think you lose anything when you die. Then again, I'm like 10 hours into the game and I think I've only died twice lol. Elizabeth revived me both times. I still have all my money. I don't spend much so I have like $4,000.

I'm actually not sure what happens when you die and Elizabeth isn't by your side... do you just restart at the most recent checkpoint? I guess I can see how that would be frustrating.

You lose cash every time you get revived, and even if you die w/o her you still revive, just differently. I must just suck because I die all the time now..I didn't die at all in the first 3-4 hours of the game though (on hard).

Oops, you're right; you do lose a little bit of money when you die. I forgot about that.

Although I'm not happy on the difficulty and other items, an 8.5 overall is fair. Infinite really draws you into the story, and the easy combat is quite forgivable, when multiple airships are bombarding you, and enemies are zipping along skylines; it's simply like nothing you've ever seen, highly polished, and interesting.

For a hardcore gamer, FPS or otherwise however, it certainly doesn't deserve a 10.

I didnt edit anything by hand except PoolSize, and I changed it back to 400 in this post.

XEngine.ini:

Code:
[TextureStreaming]
PoolSize=400
MemoryMargin=20
MemoryLoss=0
StopIncreasingLimit=12
MinEvictSize=10
MinRequestedMipsToConsider=11
MinTimeToGuaranteeMinMipCount=2
MaxTimeToGuaranteeMinMipCount=12
UseTextureFileCache=TRUE
LoadMapTimeLimit=5.0
LightmapStreamingFactor=0.04
ShadowmapStreamingFactor=0.08
MaxLightMapRadius=4096
MaxShadowmapRadius=4096
AllowStreamingLightmaps=true
TextureFileCacheBulkDataAlignment=1
UseDynamicStreaming=True
bEnableAsyncDefrag=False
bEnableAsyncReallocation=False
MaxDefragRelocations=256
MaxDefragDownShift=128
BoostPlayerTextures=3.0
TexturePoolSizeReductionMB=40
LowPCTexturePoolSizeMB=256

There is a link on the wiki regarding low textures, but I'm not sure it applies to your situation since not all the textures are low. But here it is anyways:

Those texture quality changes are the changes that I made. The problem is that in a prime example of noobery at its finest, I forgot to save a copy of the INI before I committed the changes. I just want the settings back to what they were, because if you look at my screenshots, you'll see how ugly those textures are.

Delete the ini and have Steam verify intergrity of game cache (right click on the game and go to properties and click on the local files tab).

It will see it is missing and redownload it.

You don't even need to do that. Just delete it and start the game up, it auto-generates a new one.

That is absolutely not true. If you do not have that DefaultEngine.ini file, Bioshock will refuse to start. I know from first-hand experience!

Good thing we are talking about XEngine.ini then

The discussion was originating with my DefaultEngine.ini needing its values defaulted because the link said to change 'em.

EDIT:

Having it validate the cache worked.

That would probably be why his information looked rather funny to me. DefaultEngine.ini has all this explanatory text around the fields, so when I didn't see that, I assume that he just trimmed it out.

Thats where texture streaming is configured. At least that was where you were supposed to do it according to the wiki.

Hmm you are right; I am not sure how in the world I ended up editing DefaultEngine.ini which is in a completely different folder.

Bought the game today. I'll probably be playing it months from now given my extensive backlog.

It is definitely an ending no one would want to spoil or be spoiled. Though at the same time...want to understand it more.
