Man, the boss ...
Lady Comstock
gave me a hell of a time. I died over and over to the boss the first time, so I gave up, quit out (why lose the money?), and started over. I purchased the charge upgrade that restores your entire shield and makes you invulnerable upon use. I destroyed the boss pretty quickly that time!

Thinking about it now, I should have probably swapped the clothes around that restore my shield faster. Not much of a use when I'm restoring it via Vigors instead.

I finished the game yesterday.

*May Contain Spoilers*

I was actually physically exhausted after playing for 4 hours straight trying to get to the ending.

The ending was interesting, if predictable. However, some plot elements made no sense and I feel causality was violated in the ending.

I also now understand the game's title better. It didn't take long to realize the game uses the Alternate World hypothesis.

Still an amazing game with so much content that I could have spent a week just roaming around Columbia instead of following the plot of the game.

I finished the game yesterday.

Finished it earlier too! I actually failed at the little even thing where
you fight off the Vox Populi while piloting the airship by using the Songbird.

I swear, when it comes to playing this game, I have really bad luck at noticing RPGs hidden around the combat zones. I spend days shooting down Handymen and Mechanized Patriots only to find RPGs later.

I thought this makes a lot of sense.

I tried playing on hard the first time through and quit about 2/3 through the game to restart on normal. The main problem I found with the hard difficulty is that your cash is very limited. You won't find enough to upgrade your weapons or vigors much. Since it's your first playthrough and you don't know which weapons/vigors suit your play style you can end up making costly decisions in upgrading a weapon or vigor that you find useless later in the game. Hoarding money doesn't work since you can lose a ton of cash on a tough battle in which you die a lot and not having spent the money on upgrades makes the battles even more difficult.

The enemies on normal are a lot easier but I found it to be more enjoyable since you have the leeway to experiment with different vigors and weapons. I'd save the hard/1999 playthrough until you've beaten the game and learned the best weapons/vigors.

I've found that you don't really need the RPG on handymen if you use undertow on them. It reels them in and leaves them stunned standing upright so hitting them in the heart is pretty easy with any weapon. It's best to clear out any regular soldiers before engaging the handyman though, so you can just undertow them over and over without worrying about anyone else.

Have any of you guys beat your first play-through on hard? I am having a hell of a time staying alive on what I assume is the final battle on Command Deck. I cant seem to stay alive long enough to take down those vox airships before they destroy my ships core...

So did anyone find an acceptable solution to the weird framerate chugging in certain areas? I'm usually locked at a perfect 60fps but it will randomly drop to around 50-55 and i can notice some chugging. This probably shouldn't be happening on a 7970 with a SSD and 3770K.

I had to drop it down a level because they kept destroying the ship, and I didn't have the right gun/vigor upgrades. It's pretty much impossible when it takes 8 rockets to take out a patriot. I think with the possession upgrade it would have been a lot easier but I never had enough money. Which reminds me, I really think the upgrade system in this game stinks.

Also, I haven't seen this mentioned, but is anyone bothered that this "work of art" still uses tired old "video game" bs like scavenging food and money from trash cans? I find it ridiculous and it breaks immersion. This is why regenerative health systems are so much better. I don't understand the appeal of picking up endless amounts of garbage in games.

I have a 7970ghz and I notice it in many games, in certain areas. I think it's just that certain scenes use specific effects that even the beefiest cards can't handle perfectly yet.

You have to figure out strategies to take down the automatons quickly. Intelligent use of certain vigors and clothing is recommended.

But, if you have the wrong vigors upgraded or don't have the right clothes on for what strategy you're using, you're going to have issues.

Nothing like being shot to death and emptying your clips to have everything regenerate instantly to help keep you in the immersion

I finished the game the first time on hard and it was definitely hard in some parts. I died a lot from handymen and quickly found myself completely broke on a couple of occasions. The battles towards the end were really frustrating as well.

Yes. I beat it on hard, but I did fail the event the first time. Here are some tips...

  • They usually send multiple mechanized patriots at once, so mind control one of them when you can.
  • Enemies don't seem to be capable of damaging the ship until they're up near the controls.
  • Fully Upgraded Shock Jockey can pretty much stun all enemies on the ground at once.
  • Make sure to send the Songbird after the biggest ships. You win when you defeat the two Zeppelins.
  • Do not send him after the ships with the huge guns. I took one out with a Shock Jockey + 1 sniper rifle shot to the huge gun.
  • Using Mind Control on some beefier humanoid enemies (RPG guys, etc.) can be helpful because they commit suicide when the mind control ends. They can also deal a good amount of damage to other enemies instead of you!
Unlike the first time, I took out the patriots much faster by ensuring I had one mind controlled, which kept the enemies off me. I used the rails to get behind everyone and shocked the enemy patriot (makes him vulnerable) and then shot him in the back.

As for clothing, I think I use...

Hat: Sheltered Life - Grant invulnerability when gaining health from snack and medical kits.

Shirt: Blood to Salt - Enemies provide Salts upon death 40% of the time

Pants: Urgent Care - Shield recharge delay is decreased by 2 seconds, but shield recharge time is increased by 2x.

Boots: Vampire's Embrace - Melee kills give health.

The Shirt allows me to use my Charge vigor a lot as I usually kill someone with each strike or a bullet or two afterward. You can also use the upgraded Return to Sender vigor to gain ammunition (there's a similar clothing item that has a 40% chance to restore ammo).

EDIT:

To give you an idea of my upgrades... I think I've upgraded all vigors but Undertow, Bucking Bronco and Feast of Crows. As for weapons, I've barely upgraded any of them. I have the Carbine, Machine Gun and Sniper Rifle fully upgraded as those are my main weapons that I stick with. I've chosen a few cheaper upgrades for other items such as the damage upgrades, which are usually only ~300 coins.

It's a tradeoff. I prefer that vs. eating everything in site and picking trash constantly.

I agree. I'm a lot less interested in the "game" part of this game so far than I am the atmosphere and the setting/story. It's irritating having to scrounge through dozens of boxes to pickup generic health items.

Then again, poetry without rhyme is like tennis without a net. Maybe art needs to be constrained by the tropes of its genre?

Food is Bioshock Infinite is kind of awkward, because it's really plentiful, but apart from any extra mechanics, it's also really useless. At least from what I've seen, it takes a ridiculous amount of food to heal you a modest amount. The only use I get out of food is the fact that any health return from food (or med packs) gives me limited invulnerability. So, scrounging up an orange or a chocolate bar from a dead enemy can give me a huge edge during a big gun fight.

Speaking of guns, that's where my biggest gripe comes in. Honestly, it's really annoying to have to constantly look for guns because it takes so many bullets to kill something. Not to mention that there may be guns on the ground, but depending on the ground texture or lighting in the room, it can be difficult to see them. Some ways to fix that would be an upgrade to carry more guns. I don't think we need anything too excessive, but maybe an upgrade to three guns or two upgrades that brings you to four. Also, the pistol is the only weapon with an upgrade that increases the overall ammo capacity. I'd like to see that for other weapons as well.

There was either pants or shirt that you could equip which increased ammo capacity 50%. But yeah, I would rather have the ability to keep pumping money into ammo and clip sizes. I think the scavenging was meant to encourage exploration, but its something I would have done anyway. It kind of made me revert to the old style Wolf 3D/Doom gameplay where you check every wall looking for secrets. I checked every bookcase, desk, suitcase, trashcan, etc, looking for stuff. It would have been nice to explore instead of scavenge.

I know the clothing item that you're talking about, but unless I'm remembering incorrectly, it only boosts magazine (clip) size by 75%. I believe that just boosts the number of rounds before you need to reload... not the overall size. I used to use that item for awhile before I got a better one.

Oh yeah, its called Bullet Boon. Increases all weapons clip size by 50%. The other one is Ammo Advantage, which is 75%, but only available if you bought the season pass.

Well, if ammo is the problem you either need to regen it via the shirt, or use less of it through more damage per shot. The +50% headshot damage boots are huge for that, and combined with the shock-burst on overkill shirt it's a big help. The +25% ADS/-25% hipfire equipment would also help if you ADS a lot.

I only wanted more ammo for the hand cannon. I didnt really have an ammo problem with the other guns. I probably finished with max ammo on all guns except the hand cannon, carbine, and RPG, although I think I loaded up on the RPG
before I went to the deck to meet Elizabeth because I still thought I would have to fight Songbird
.
