I always just put my ear up to the console when I hit the power button. If it doesn't go completely silent then you're set.
The green light on the power button will also flash while it is downloading 'turned-off'.
Mine flashes like that but it downloads a lot slower in 'background' mode. Oh well, from now on I'll just leave it on over night. BTW, I turn it off using the power button on a logitech remote. If the flashing indicates the mode is working then I guess the manner in which I choose to turn it off isn't the issue. Maybe my box is about to red ring!
To add to this, apparently now it will not move beyond 59%. It has been sitting there for an hour. This is the second time this has happened to me with the d/l (first time was in the 50% range) so I just deleted and started it over. Both times were after allowing the thing to d/l overnight only to find out it never completed almost 18 hours later. I have plenty of capacity on the hd.
That's all very odd. Not one of my friends have had any issues other than the initial bandwidth issues when it was first released. My friend just downloaded it in less than an hour last night.
