BioStar board

Hello All,
Thanks for being here while I refresh my old computer brain.
I have this board, yes old as it is.
TA790GXE 128M -w- 8GB ram
I have reason and desire to max this board out.
I want to go up to 16GB as the manufacturer states is capable.
Since this board is older their recommended memory from their site is listed to 8GB,
with no recommendations for type and manufacturer for more.
BioStar tells me the board is not compatible with Windows 10, I'm using Windows 10.
Short of buying and trying any suggestions out there?

crucial.com and corsair.com both have "memory selectors" that will show you what memory is compatible with your board.

Crucial does list one DDR2 4GB part, but they are $120 EACH, $480 for 16 GB! - http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ta790gxe-128m-5*x/CT1012879

For that price, buying a new motherboard + CPU + RAM probably makes more sense. The part is also out of stock (maybe no longer manufactured) so you might need to buy used from somewhere.

that is a heafty price tag, im trying not to have to reinstall all of my software.
Some of it allthough running with all the windows updates and such probably would not reinstall from a fresh windows install.

Honestly I might have a bunch of DDR2 stashed away, I think I have 10+ 4gb DIMMs. Let me check my stock, id probably just let it go for the price of shipping, I really have no use for it.

This board wants DDR2 ram, which will cost you a ridiculous amount of money, and a pretty poor performance. Also, i don't think your board has much life left in it, god knows if it will even have the voltage to run 16Gb of ram.

You say you have reasons, but unless they are "i made a bet" then getting a new board and CPU is the only sane decision.

A friend of mine is on an AM2+ ASRock board, with 4x DDR2 DIMM slots. We filled them with some "cheap Chinese DDR2", some time ago. The first unbranded batch didn't work, but the second batch that was branded with Hynix sticks (could have been fake), worked pretty well. He has an AM3 CPU, an Athlon II X4.

But seriously, short of trying the Chinese DDR2 route, which can be very hit-or-miss with some boards, just suck it up and upgrade. Unless your 790GX board has four PCI-E x16 slots like mine does. I'm loath to replace it.

Well, Firstly I wanted to play City Skylines.
Then I saw that the board could be upgraded to 16gb, thought, why not?
It runs everything I throw at it from 3 different 3d drawing apps, word, excel, outlook, and browsers.
Without a hitch, But you are all right in that it is time to upgrade, I just have software that I can't replace nor backup if you know what I mean. and the daunting task of simply installing it all again anyway. Well and money. But on the other hand a crash is going to force that hand Aye?
