Delaware GOP congressman Rep. Mike Castle made it on the Drudge Report today, but it?s not the kind of publicity the Senate recruit was looking for.

At a recent town hall meeting, Castle was confronted by a woman, birth certificate in hand, who unleashed an angry stemwinder about why she believes President Obama is not a legal citizen of the United States.

Many members of the audience applaud her remarks, leading Castle to diplomatically insist: ?If you?re referring to the president, then he is a citizen of the United States.?

That didn?t play well with the crowd, who start booing and hissing. Castle responds: "You can boo, but he is a citizen of the United States.?

Castle, one of the leading Republican moderates in the House, is considering a Senate campaign next year. But this is the kind of reception that could dissuade him from pursuing another race.

I'm no Ron Paul fan, but remember when some conservative pundits used to accuse Ron Paul about being associated with 9/11 truthers because of that one flimsy video of some college kids going up to RP asking him truther questions?

How about all these birther nutjobs? It seems their numbers are growing more and more each day and they're getting louder and louder. You can't even be a reasonably moderate republican who thinks Obama really is a citizen of the USA without getting shouted down by these freaks.

I really hope that the GOP wakes up and sees their wingnuts for what they really are...a boatanchor around its neck. If they keep pandering to this hardcore base, they will lose. As it stands there is no other party that can replace them. I for one wouldn't want to give the dems free reign of government solely because of Republican stupidity.

Reality is based on perception and people can choose what to perceive. Therefore, some people will still call the President a Muslim or a non-citizen regardless of anything. Nothing will prove it to them once that door has been opened. The damage has been done and they?ll believe what they like to believe.

It would have helped if back in the 60s that Hawaii would have had better records and stricter rules on issuing certificates. Far as I?m concerned I don?t care if the President wasn?t officially born on US soil. The man has lived most his life here. He has lived the life of an American and his peers among the Democratic Party saw fit to promote him. The nation saw fit to elect him.

The man is President of the United States, and we should treat him as such. Moreover, any legitimacy the birthers claim by ?destructive? policy needs to be recognized as not policy forged by a Manchurian Candidate, but instead as the policy of the Democratic Party. If they have a problem with his policy they should take it up with the Democrats and not focus on a lone man at the head of that party.

That bold statement is completely false, especially since the last primary and election. I've been on this board a long time and it's never been this bad in regard to right wing nutjob trolls. It's hard to keep track of them with their multiple accounts though.

To start with, the theory that Obama is not a US citizen has made it up to SCOTUS, and the existing justices have slammed the door on even considering it, simply because the support for such a hypothesis may exist as a unprovable conspiracy theory, but the proof that Obama is not a US citizen is totally missing. And if the existing justices have so ruled, as Obama replaces some of them, its even more unlikely that SCOTUS, as a final word, will change.

Yet we must face the facts. (1) No amount of reasoning will change the mind of these birthers. (2) As rock ribbed Republicans, birthers and the religious right make up perhaps 25% of the republican base, and as such, are a group the GOP can not afford to alienate.

The problem is that the GOP does not know how to put its extreme right wing in its proper place, and in so failing alienates the larger and more rational part of its base. After all, the radical right can hardly threaten to join the democrats, and as an independent party, they are far to small to even get any one elected dog catcher.
