most recent edit: gotten idle vid card temp to 36C (down from ~40C), and CPU temp to 37C (down from ~44C) and MB temp to 25C (down from ~30C) Just from doing following:
i think the only thing else i could do now, is to "Lap" my heatsink and give both cpu and heatsink a jolly good scrub! As for some reason, my scythe heat sink is a wave of ridges, it looks like its supposed to be like that though, so maybe it wouldnt help... I reckon it would though, but ill save that for when i ever get some sandpaper heh
hi, the other day i bought some new stuff to bring the temps (and, well, noise mostly actually) in time for summer.
I bought.. Scythe Ninja Plus (one with 120mm fan)
Zalman VF900 -Cu
3 Akasa amber Ultra Quiet 80mm case fans
Enermax Liberty 400W modular
This was in order to cool a winchester 3200+ @ 2500 mhz (1.525v) on an asus a8v, with a X800XT PE.
Well, im pretty pleased with the VF 900, which gives me about 40C idle and 50C load, as opposed to 55c idle, 85c load as before. However, the CPU still runs a bit warmer than i had hoped. 45C idle at the moment, with 32C motherboard temp, as reported by Asusprobe.
As i type, i'd guess the ambient temp is about 25C (not cold, not warm). I have my 3 case fans set to intake, with "vents" for exaust by empty pci slot brackets heh. I Have tried to reseat the scythe a few times, (arctic silver 5 by the way) but it is difficult, being so big and the retention clips are awkward, i have to basically lift one side of the hs off of the chip so i can clip it in, not so good for thermal paste i imagine..
Dont get me wrong, I am happy with the low noise of the new setup though, but does anyone have suggestions to bring down the temps a bit?
Cheers
edit: i should probably also mention that i never cleaned the cpu / heatsink meticulously between reseats, i mean, i rubbed it with a rag until i couldnt see goo, and then some, but .. yeah, can this have a noticeable effect on temps? What then, should i clean it with.. I don't want to buy some special cleaner really, i have normal house hold cleaners, and.. i heard alcohol, but... well, i have some Tia Mariah or some wine ... would that work? lol
- changing one rear case fan to exhaust - so there is one exaust next to 1 intake, sounds strange but seems to work well with the way my kit is set up..)
- Cable management. Managed to scrimp and save on all plugs, managing to remove 3 entire cables from my case... Modular FTW
- Changing the scythe fan position from intake of behind my vid card, to intake from behind my hard disk (neither sounds ideal, but..)
