most recent edit: gotten idle vid card temp to 36C (down from ~40C), and CPU temp to 37C (down from ~44C) and MB temp to 25C (down from ~30C) Just from doing following:
  • changing one rear case fan to exhaust - so there is one exaust next to 1 intake, sounds strange but seems to work well with the way my kit is set up..)
  • Cable management. Managed to scrimp and save on all plugs, managing to remove 3 entire cables from my case... Modular FTW
  • Changing the scythe fan position from intake of behind my vid card, to intake from behind my hard disk (neither sounds ideal, but..)

i think the only thing else i could do now, is to "Lap" my heatsink and give both cpu and heatsink a jolly good scrub! As for some reason, my scythe heat sink is a wave of ridges, it looks like its supposed to be like that though, so maybe it wouldnt help... I reckon it would though, but ill save that for when i ever get some sandpaper heh

hi, the other day i bought some new stuff to bring the temps (and, well, noise mostly actually) in time for summer.

I bought.. Scythe Ninja Plus (one with 120mm fan)
Zalman VF900 -Cu
3 Akasa amber Ultra Quiet 80mm case fans
Enermax Liberty 400W modular

This was in order to cool a winchester 3200+ @ 2500 mhz (1.525v) on an asus a8v, with a X800XT PE.

Well, im pretty pleased with the VF 900, which gives me about 40C idle and 50C load, as opposed to 55c idle, 85c load as before. However, the CPU still runs a bit warmer than i had hoped. 45C idle at the moment, with 32C motherboard temp, as reported by Asusprobe.

As i type, i'd guess the ambient temp is about 25C (not cold, not warm). I have my 3 case fans set to intake, with "vents" for exaust by empty pci slot brackets heh. I Have tried to reseat the scythe a few times, (arctic silver 5 by the way) but it is difficult, being so big and the retention clips are awkward, i have to basically lift one side of the hs off of the chip so i can clip it in, not so good for thermal paste i imagine..

Dont get me wrong, I am happy with the low noise of the new setup though, but does anyone have suggestions to bring down the temps a bit?

Cheers
edit: i should probably also mention that i never cleaned the cpu / heatsink meticulously between reseats, i mean, i rubbed it with a rag until i couldnt see goo, and then some, but .. yeah, can this have a noticeable effect on temps? What then, should i clean it with.. I don't want to buy some special cleaner really, i have normal house hold cleaners, and.. i heard alcohol, but... well, i have some Tia Mariah or some wine ... would that work? lol

Set the rear fan to exhaust and see what happens.

EDIT: You installed the Ninja with the motherboard in place?

Get a new case considering how you're using 3 80mm fans. Those aren't great for cooling unless they're high RPM and high noise. A case with 120mm fans will definitely bring those temps down.

I am running a 3200+ Winnie as well, and on an Asus A8V Deluxe. I'm running at 2350MHz and idle temps are about 37-38C, and load temps top out at around 50C. My ambient temp is about 27-28C though. At 2500Mhz or higher, I'm guessing I'd be at about the same temperatures as you.

It does sound to me like an airflow issue that could be improved with either larger fans or a new case. What case are you using?

its an Antec 1040BII. It does only have 80mm holes/brackets for the 80mm fans, these seem to have quite good airflow though, while being quiet

I should have clarified, there are 2 rear fans, 1 front fan. I think the rear fans get better throughput as the front one is a bit restricted by the case design. So i want to keep 2 at the back, and i think it would be bad with them at the back, working against each other? Well, guess i could try..

first time i did, but the most recent reseat was taking the motherboard out of the case. didnt make much difference with the retention attempt.. still sort of makes me pull the heatsink base up in order to clip on all 4 sides :/

bleh thanks for help anyway, its not the end of the world

probably a better idea would be to have the rear fans set as exhaust. That way the heat from the CPU goes someplace. You would get negative pressure in the case which would cause it to get dusty faster tho. But its worth a try to see what difference it makes.

Remove ur side panel, if ur temps drop ...it aint the Ninja, its a case/fan problem. If temps dont change, u have seating issues with ur cooler.
I notice ur case doesnt have any venting on ur case side panel, out of curiosity i closed off the 2 meshed areas on my case for silence reasons, and the temps climbed significantly. I think ur best mod is to install a 120mm in the bottom of ur case, right under ur vga card, from a friends experience ur cooling will b huge, silent, and invisible
ps. just make sure u have the clearance 1st.

My 3200+ E3 venice @ 2.5ghz 1.5volts with the Ninja in Passive(without a fan) is 36-37C idle and 44-45C load. And that is without a fan. I am pleased.

new case with 120mm fan in the front and rear. you need more intake of cool air from the room, rewire your case to remove cables from blocking airflow. my 4800 @ 2.6 idles at 40c in the HOT NYC summer with no AC on
