BitTorrent across a Network

Sorry about the blank post...
Is there a way to run a BitTorrent-like thing across the network? I distribute a lot of files at a LAN Party coming up soon...(maps, mods, patches...etc)...What should I use?

How big of files are you talking about here and how many people? Unless they're truly enormous, a plain FTP or HTTP transfer should be pretty speedy on a local connection. I mean, even at 10/100 you should be able push 10 MB/sec over HTTP easily. Supposing you've got even 200 MB of files (seems like a lot to me, but I'm out of the gaming loop), you can serve one person everything you need in 20 seconds, or equivalently a dozen people in 4 minutes.

Yeah, I understand that, but they're probably going to be upward of a gigabyte. And the files will be shared from a laptop, which is slow...I was trying to figure out the most time effective distribution method.

How many people? Even a gigabyte would only take about a minute and a half. The laptop may be slow, but it should still be fast enough to saturate a 10/100 link.

DVD/CD's?

Not that bittorrent wouldn't work or anything. It just seems like added complexity.

That's kinda what its for. If you are having poor performance on a LAN then there are other more serious problems.

By the time you get enough seeds to make it worthwhile, everyone will already have a copy.

Look up the direct connect program. We used to use it at the Seattle U Dorms. its like setting up your own private kazaa like network. You install a hub version on one pc, and a client version on all other pcs.

I was going to suggest that as well. A co-worker of mine uses that program when he hosts a LAN party.
