I can't figure out how to fix this problem. It started when I switched to the Catalyst 5.8 (CCC) drivers from 5.7 (Classic). I also installed GTA: San Andreas and replaced my nForce audio driver with an updated realtek driver (to fix EAX compatability in GTA). This glitch isn't only happening in games. The desktop has strange glitches also, but they look different.

I uninstalled 5.8 CCC and tried 5.8 Classic, but the problem persisted. I then went back to 5.7 Classic and used Driver Cleaner, but the problem still persists. I tried reinstalling my original nForce sound driver and uninstalling GTA, and i still get this problem. As far as I can tell, I un-did everything that could have caused this problem, but it still happens.

I can temporarily get rid of the glitches by alt-tabbing in and out of the game. I also had some video glitches at the command prompt when selecting safe mode.

looks like artifacts to me. usually the result of hardware going bad, over heating, being unstable, bad memory

im not sure what types of artefacts are attributed to what piece of hardware is going wrong (ill take a stab an guess that this is attributed to the GPU not the memory), but last time i saw things like that, it was on my friends X800XT PE and that thing had to go back the to the shop, and they gave hime a x850xt instead

i remember the 9700 being a pretty roasty card, with that puny HSF, its getting on abit now so prolonged use at high temperatures could now be having adverse effects on your card. but it does seem strange that a driver change seemingly brought it on

is there anyway you can check temperatures?

or try UNDERclocking your card to say 200-250 mhz, using ATi tool and see if they go away?

Sorry about the triple post, it's hard to see what I'm doing now that my video card problem has worsened.

Example

I tried underclocking it and that didn't change anything. I don't know if my card has a temperature sensor, ATI Tray Tool's gpu temperature options were grayed out.

My cousin has a near identicle setup (except for his 9800 Pro) so I slapped my card in that and I got the same problem. So it looks like my video card is broken. The problem has worsened as well, looks like it's time to get that refurb X800 Pro from ATI. Should be twice as fast.

Your card is overheating and you need to RMA.
