Just FYI ... McDonald's, Burger King, and other fast food chains use beef which has "bovine offal" in it. This includes the brains, spinal cords, and eyeballs of the cows. The offal acts as a binder to keep the patties from falling apart on the grill. There are vegetable binders available but the reason they don't use them is that they could not call their burgers "all-beef" if they did.

This is not a plug from PETA or a call for vegetarianism or anything like that - you should just know what you are eating.

Here's some mouth-watering facts about how McDonald's barfer... er, burgers are made!

1. Cooking the meat. Those small patties are cooked all of 35 to 38 seconds in between two giant heated iron cooking thing. When the time is up, the meat's not all the way done most the time; that's why employees are required to wait 5 minutes before they use it (it's left for 5 minutes on the standby area for meat, where it keeps getting heated). But you know what happens when it gets busy, like during the "39-cent burger" days?... Yeah. I guess profit overweighs safety. And hey, a little blood on the burger can't hurt, right?

FYI, quarter-pounders are cooked on the same machine, but for about 110 seconds.

2. Cooking the nuggets and such. The oil that these things bask in get dumped once at night right before closing. That's the only time it's usually changed. Yum!

3. The meat tray which cooked meat stand-bys in is cleaned off once in a while at the dishwashing room; however, swiftness overweighs a good, clean job, and therefore some old burger grease tends to stay on the thing.

4. i forgot when the tomato slicer got cleaned.

Well, I guess it's been over a year since I worked there, so things may have changed - but Mmm mmm, don't these juicy facts just get your taste buds working?

Just remember that even the worste commercial kitchens generally have half the bacteria of the average home kitchen. Even though they may only clean those counters once a day, how often do you clean yours????

jfunk: 1. I challenge you to quote a reputable source for that information. 2. The whole "antibacterial" scare is a bunch of hype. Bacteria are ubiquitous. You can scrub your skin till you're raw in the shower and you'll still be covered with them. It's the pathogenic ones that you need to look out for, such as found in undercooked meat.

What is wrong with cow eyeballs, entrails, and spinal chords? Are your prejudice against certain parts of the cow? Would you prefer that they be in seperate grinders and seperate patties? That is segregation and that is wrong!!!!

We should love all of mother nature's creatures......not part of them.

I have never been able to eat at BK after working next door to a crematorium in SE Portland. They smell exactly the same. About the only Fast Food place I will eat at is In-n-Out when I am in Cali, or Burgerville here in the Portland area.

Also a big thumbs up to Stanich's as mentioned in RossMANS post....
