The ideas has been around for a few years, but Hanwha Japan Co., Ltd have now created a recording system for your car. The UMAZONe X-Vue K3 is a compact camera that records upto 2 hours of driving footage using a 2GB storage card.

But dont worry once its full the clever device automatically starts overwriting the old footage in a continuous loop, never to miss anything important.

Still not quiet sure how this would help if you were hit from behind or the side. Unless you have cameras on all sides. However the X-Vue K3 measures only 102 x 41 x 77mm and weighs only 95g making it easily mounted behind your rear-view mirror

.

There are no details on shipping dates at the moment but the in car recordign device can be purchased from Hanwha’s product page for approx $157.

I have always thought someone would come up with this but figured it would be with at least 2 cameras, front and rear. It would hold drivers accountable, just last week it was raining like hell and on I-95 there was some idiot in a jacked up Expedition tailgating anyone who stood in his/her way of sustaining 90+ MPH, would have been cool to forward a video of this moron to the FHP..

The only problem with these things is you might forget it's there and you cause an accident. Or you run over the neighbor's cat or something.

This should've been out a loooong time ago. I'm pretty sure there are already other devices on the market. I could easily see something like this going for $40.

A device like this needs to backup in real time to your house. What use is a camera when they just take it?

I've wondered why more products like this aren't marketed. Seems like many of traffic accidents/violations are he said/she saids.

It needs:

1) Video recording of all 4 sides of vehicle
2) Logging of pertinent vehicle info like speed, etc...
3) GPS logging/timetagging

Yeah it just sounds like a cheap hacked digital camera - they got rid of all the buttons and LCD and rewrote some firmware so that it records continuously in a loop.

It would be badass if they put on a spherical mirror or something to cover all sides, audio, GPS, and OBD-II data.

I thought Progressive Insurance was actually offering REAL black boxes (that record things like speed) in return for lowered rates.

The black box shows you don't drive like a moron, they lower your rates, sounds win/win to me.

As long as it doesnt become mandatory so the conspiracy theorists and tin foil hatters can all opt out.

I wish I had one of these that I can use to send footage to the police station. You'd be amazed at some of the stunts I see people pull around here on a day to day basis.

It uses a 2GB storage card. i'd assume those are SD Cards.

2GB SD cards are like what? $5? just swap 'em out.

I meant wirelessly, so that after the cop is done beating the shit out of you and he steals your camera, there's a backup somewhere you can crawl to and make copies of.

Drivecam has accelerometers on two axes.

Search for drivecam on youtube.

The guy going feet first through the rear window is probably the most known.
The bus with failed steering is kind of scary.
I'm leery of buses particularly on the islands. Folks there make Manhattan drivers look good! Yeah it's that bad. Some friends of mine were injured a few years ago in Honduras when a bus they were in flipped on its side because a van cut them off. I probably would have been on that bus if I was not on vacation.

That's cool but yeah, imo that should be standard on cars now. You technically only need like 15 minutes even, so it does not have to be anything ubber though extra storage space is nice that way you could have an option to tell it to store footage asside. You just want enough resolution so you can read a license plate. I always lol when people ask "did you get the license plate?" Yeah, I'm going to scramble for pen and paper and try to write down a license plate number while driving. That's real safe.

WOW those are some amazing captures. It really shows how accidents happen. We don't see this often AT ALL. This definitely provides some very useful data in demonstrating what creates accidents.

Making this mandatory in every car would be likely to provide many benefits. However in a regards to privacy, it might require additional solutions.
Plus the G-meter is plain cool! :awe:
It might serve as a motivation to get people to try to get the number as high as they could. :awe:
This is totally economically feasible as well. Heck, for the price two synthetic oil changes, you can fit one of these in.

It's called telematics, and Progressive isn't the only one. All of the major carriers are going to start doing it, and it is going to be marketed as a new discount. Which you will get a discount if you use it. You also could be rated based on data from that.

I'm not sure about the other companies, but with ours we won't be using that to underwrite against (i.e. deny coverage or raise rates) for a bit. You can bet that there will be a huge push to that.

I doubt it will become required to obtain insurance anytime in the next 10 years, because I do not see it getting adopteded that quickly (unless companies start mandating it, but doing that would be suicide). Also, the states DoI will most likely not allow us to use that for rating information. What I could see happening though, is it blocking you from getting into the standard lines (i.e. the better rates, discounts, etc lines) in 15-20 years.
