I think you get your "deposit" back when you return your cart. I didn't know that the first time I went there. It was cold and snowing. I got out of my car and saw this kid struggling to return the cart after unloading his moms car. I thought I'd be a nice guy by taking the cart off his hands. He looked startled like I was going to rip him off when I said "I'll take that cart for ya." Wasn't till I was done shopping that I realized... [/i] I was ripping him off!!!

You don't PAY to use the cart, its a 25 cent deposit that comes out when you hook it up again unless you're a cart thief, which is why they do that.

The foods are usually non-name brands, sometimes generic quality but its very cheap. The store around here isn't great to get much at but is awesome to get certain things at.

Yes, you get your quarter back, if you return your cart. Actually I really like that. I never see carts left in their parking lot rolling into vehicles leaving dents and scratches. I wish walmart would do the same, so that people would return their carts to the cart holders, cause I do anyway. Lazy people would just as soon leave them in the lot, blocking parking spaces and potentially rolling into other's vehicles.

I like shopping at ALDI's. Usually save 50% compared to Walmart, and I like most of their stuff.

You are so right. I made out like a BANDIT last year by standing in the pre-dawn line at Best Buy. And of course I put my dad in the Staples line next door.

Hey, just ahead of time, anybody willing to buy one for me if it's cheap? I don't live anywhere near an Aldi's! =( and I was so jealous the last time you guys had the laptop deal. I can c2it the money or paypal or whatever. Have heatware myself(I stupidly got myself into the middle of a group buy...was so scared that people would do chargebacks on me since I had accepted by Paypal then resent the money) and 95 overall ebay rating =P so I'm good for the cash and everything. Let me know!

LOL...poor kid probably thought the mean man tried to steal his quarter. Next time you see the kid you should probably give him a quarter back.

In Queens, New York City, all the big supermarkets have this system...

I actually doubt that it's to prevent the carts from being stolen(since it's 25 cents !!!) but it's to make you push the cart in yourself so they can fire the workers that previously had to walk around and hunt down carts from all around(including the parking lot) and put them back at the end of the day. There's probably a slight benefit against stealing, but that really only stops thieves that don't have quarters. lol

Matt L :

you put a quater in the cart slot so you can use the cart but you get it back when you put the cart back. Its a way of them making sure they dont have carts floating around everywhere and have to pay someone to get them. (cheaper prices) besides its kinda nice to know that you wont have to deal with wild carts smashing into your car because they were left in the parking lot and the wind took them. They also carry many name brand items or thier products are made by name brand producers. Its listed on many of the labels such as who actualy makes the item. Dont slam them for selling something at a cheap price if you want to pay more go somewhere else but dont slam them just cause they save you money.

you dont actually PAY to use a cart, you deposit 25 cents and then return it when your done and get your money back, for low to medium income and college students, this is a great place to shop, and i may have to pick one of these up for my parents since they were looking for a nwe computer

OK guys, I think we understand how the cart deposit system works now. And it only took 10 messages of the exact same explanation....

So what price would make this a "hot" deal?

Personally, since the last thing I need is a new rig, it would have to be smoking for me to pick it up, something like $500 or so. Not likely so I'm probably going to pass on this one.

Well (and I agree it's dumb to speculate when we have no idea), I'd say this one is definitely going to be closer to $1000. They've been gradually walking the prices up, and this really is a top-of-the-line configuration. On the other hand, no monitor (though it looks like you'll have the option of adding a Medion LCD).

If it's $500, these will sell like crazy. Components alone are well worth that. My guess is it will be more like $800-$1000.

Is there any kind of a resale market for grocery store carts? Seems a good deal to load up on these things for only a quarter...

My guess is $999.

Its a low budget store and I don't think many of the customers would be willing or able to pay much more than that for a desktop.

I talked to the Aldi manager here in Raleigh and he seemed to think the price point would be like last years model.
His quote was $899, but he didnt sound too sure of himself.
He did say they probably wouldn't advertise the price until the Monday before and that he expects lines like last year.
So warm up the RV and find a comfy spot out front.

I talked to the manager in Winston-Salem and he sounded very confident of $899. Good price but with the recent Dell deals it seems warm not hot; $699 would be hot....

Also he said the last computer he only received 22 -- this one he is allotted for 35. last one sold out in 12 minutes (sold out in parking lot -- buyers received slip with number).
