What they said.

However, I will state that I too, am in the market for a TV for my bedroom. There's a nice deal for a 49" Toshiba at Best Buy for $149.99. Sweet, right?! Bummer it's in store only. The real ball buster? Best Buy opens at 5PM on Thursday. You have to be fucking kidding me. I'll be enjoying family, food and booze as well as everyone else under the sun should be doing. That is absurd. It's seriously out of control.

Yeah my wife does security there. She is not a happy camper.

Yeah, I'm refusing to shop on Thanksgiving. It's a holiday for me, and it should be a holiday for everyone in retail.

I don't blame her. No one should. It just pisses me off that some multi gazillion dollar company is making their employees come in at literally dinner time to deal with a bunch of assholes on what is supposed to be an enjoyable, family gathering. I don't give a shit what you're selling at your store, you can close your doors for 24 hours.

No disagreement from me here. Though this year it doesn't matter much as I also have to work all day, and won't see her when I get home.

I'll be mad and sad for both of you guys. Are you retail also? Or is your avatar a cop for a reason......? :sneaky:

They haven't touched Christmas... yet.
Seriously speaking, the only "general" major national holiday that's affected this way is Thanksgiving, and that's only because so many people (consumers) have made such a big thing out of "Black Friday." Postponing major purchases in anticipation of it, searching out "leaked" BF ads, creating web forums about it, etc...

As for spending the day with family, I know plenty of people who welcome any excuse to get as far away from theirs as quickly as possible after the obligatory visitations are over. (And no, not me. Turkey Day isn't a particularly big deal as far as I'm concerned, but on the other hand, I've never gone in-store shopping on Black Friday in my life, never having had any great desire to be poked, jabbed, elbowed and/or kicked repeatedly in the fleshy parts of my body by people making life-or-death dives for that last Cabbage Patch doll or whatever else is hot that year... :biggrin

The sad thing is that I'm not really sure what's "hot" this year. Almost everyone who wants a tablet or a smartphone or game console already has one at this point.

I guess that RC quadcopters and drones might be a hot item, but after repeatedly crashing mine I've decided that this would be a BAD Christmas gift for a kid

Sure there are "hot" items year in and year out, but the marketing has people in the mindset that they will be saving thousands. They've gone so far that Black Friday is now starting Thursday. And now the 'Cyber Monday' deals. And I believe there was some 'Small Business Wednesday' or something IRCC. They're just blowing it out of proportion to make an extra few cents in the grand scheme of things.

The average person who is running out for said "hot" item is saving MAYBE $200? $200 to sit in line for 12 hours, possibly freezing your ass off depending where you live, not to mention the traffic. All of that on top of dealing with a bunch of idiots? No thanks - I'll be behind my keyboard saving some money instead. It's just not worth it to me at all.

Even $200 is stretching it. I've found that I can find even the bigger ticket items online for about $100 more.

Keep in mind too, a lot of people work the Friday after, so that Thursday may be their only option.

That said, I will never, ever go out shopping on Thanksgiving. Too much football and food to enjoy.

I totally agree. Black Friday is so diluted now that i have no interest, and i absolutely have no interest in shopping on Thursday.

Which is exactly what REI is doing, giving their worker a paid holiday. Finally, a retailer with a touch of class.

Much respect for them.

When I started working at a certain retail chain 6 years ago, we got 3 holidays. Christmas and Easter are the only two that remain. On the last year that we got Thanksgiving off, we were told that, even though a few other chains have decided to open on Thanksgiving, we will not, specifically with the reason given, "because they care about our families." That really meant something to me, and I took it to heart. I gladly came into work the following day with determination for helping the company succeed.

Sadly, the next year they told us that we'll be opening at 6PM on Thanksgiving (meaning managers and some employees would need to be there as early as 1PM). Apparently they had decided that they no longer cared about our families somewhere between Christmas and their fiscal year-end reports.

I've noticed a couple of major chains doing it too, like Lowe's and TJ Maxx (and so I assume but don't know for sure that Marshall's, Home Goods, etc. will also be closed.) The latter will have slightly extended hours the next 3 days, but that doesn't seem unreasonable in context...

Just saw a commercial that PC Richards is doing the same thing. Something along the lines of "Enjoy your family on Thanksgiving. Our doors will be open on Friday." They also made mention that any deal they have will be available all day Friday... As in, item in Stock is not an issue. The price will be the same the entire day and they aren't making you wait in line for 12 hours to get 1 of 3 in Stock. I thought that was interesting...

Not sure if anyone else got the email from Best Buy this morning, but they are having their Black Friday deals for "elite" members right now. TV's, as well as everything else, listed in their Black Friday ad are at Black Friday prices this morning.
