PBS NewsHour had a story about this tonight. Same old tired lines such as "shocked about suspensions" of blacks and hispanics from a woman from Department of Education. Nothing about what those students did to warrant those suspensions. Must be because of racist white teachers unleash their racism onto those innocent minority students (except Asian student of course). <sarcastic>

I wonder why she "FORGOT" to mention Asian students or why they did not suck so badly as other minorities in school? Darn those sold out/acting white/not keep it real/uncle tom/<fill in the blank excuses> Asian students.

While true, its a very complicated problem.

The quality of the schools, teachers, and parents matter and are hard to quantify. Socioeconomic factors will show similar correlations as well. So the OP fell hard for correlation =/= causation?

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Happy, smiling faces, big wide eyes, innocent. This sums up the African children I work with in Zambia. It is refreshing to be with children who are undemanding, unspoilt, who are so poor but somehow manage to be happy. They have so little – no TVs, no computers, no toys nor sports equipment and yet they rarely complain. Some of my most pleasurable times at Mukuni are visiting the school children and watching the younger ones playing on the sandy terrain.

African children are tough. From an early age they have to fetch water, help with the chores and look after their younger siblings.

They have no choice of what they eat, their staple diet in countries like Zambia is maize; typical daily meals are porridge made from mealie meal (ground maize) for breakfast, sheema (ground maize resembling unseasoned mash potato) with vegetables for lunch and for supper more sheema, salad and ground nuts, the latter being their main source of protein.

Only families who have a good income can afford eggs, chicken or bread; with two thirds of the population living on less than 50 ($1 dollar) a day, these items are a luxury. Too many African children have to suffice on one meal a day, when I first set up the charity one of our initial projects was to provide a daily nutritional meal at Mukuni Basic School to feed vulnerable children.

African children walk long distances to school through bush, crossing elephant paths and rivers. I actually drove to one area where children set off at 4am to get to Mukuni High School for 7pm, often having no breakfast until they reach school. For this reason many younger children are unable to be educated until they are old enough to walk several miles a day.

Zambian education is essential for these children who are eager to learn and have very little else in their lives, it gives them hope and a chance to better their situation. Giving them an education will enable these vulnerable children to be aware of the dangers of HIV and AIDS and a chance to support their families in the future.

African women make loving and caring mothers, and are very protective towards their offsprings. African children are generally well disciplined both at home and at school. They support one another especially in the rural villages, where families are extended to accommodate the numerous orphans of AIDS. It is heartbreaking for mothers having to cope with so many illnesses and diseases: malaria, HIV/AIDS, aliments that cannot be cured and no money to send their children for treatment. The Butterfly Tree funds operations, medication and physiotherapy for children at Mukuni Health Centre.

Despite the terrible hardships African children have to endure they can always manage to smile.

There are an awful lot of people in this thread and in our society in general who need to brace themselves for a very, very dramatic and thorough refutation of their entire worldview courtesy of rapidly advancing science. More than enough mainstream studies already exist but the ability to keep their implications out of the public discourse is going to be less and less as the number of studies and discoveries mounts, which it does every day.

Biology is destiny, and it looms larger and varies more widely than almost anyone currently imagines.

Here's a good video from an Australian biologist who goes into many of the discoveries which show that absolutely everything about our behavior, tendencies, demeanor, fidelity in marriage... EVERYTHING is biologically influenced.

Culture is biology's bitch. In a very real sense, culture is just another manifestation of biology.

Probably that explains why you are so pathetically inferior and easily hypnotized.

Sorry, you're right. Fucking African Americans....

More proof that it's culture. I bet Asians kids are less likely to get into trouble than white kids and not may people will have a hard time believing that. It's a tiger mom culture heavily rooted in education. Even if you look back to ancient China, it was possible to advance in society(for anyone! rich or poor) by studying and taking exams. When I first came to this country, we were poor. Poverty, no food, not even a dinning table poor. There were a few mentalities my father showed me. No hand outs! I got a royal beating when he found out I applied for the lunch assistance program at school to get discount lunches. Man up! Whenever a situation was fucked up and it was blatantly obvious that it wasn't my fault, it's five across the face if I tried to explain to him how it wasn't my fault. Why? Because he taught us a culture of self improvement and you can't avoid the same mistake again if you blame the current mishap on others who are outside of your control so you must adjust yourself.

I might not be the amazing success that defines 95% of the people here, but not bad for a family who started off making $300/month (far below minimum wage)

I'm not saying there's no racism in this country, but this I'm the victim mentality and white people have change more is not going to work.

How dare you not blame the faceless White Man™ that's supposed to oppress you and keep you down under his boot at all times?

I guess your local WPMO (White Privilege Minority Oppression) squad was slacking off. Maybe they were drinking with the PPFO (Patriarchal Privilege Female Oppression) squad. Maybe they should merge and oppress both females and minorities.

"Be quiet you evil bigot, circumstances of birth have nothing to do with how people act/behave!

Well, except for whether or not they're gay. Or whether or not they're transgender."

It can be considered bigoted when used to push an agenda.

A lot of truth in that. Show me a shitty kid and their shitty parent(s) are right there with them. Whether it's a black kid misbehaving in school or a white kid showing their ass in a restaurant when I am trying to eat, I blame the parents.

Pit bull dogs bite three times as often as Golden Retriever.

Must be pit bull culture.

That's really sad if true. Pit bulls should heed their masters and be grateful for what they have. Not biting the hand that feeds them.

To be fair, it's really not accurate to compare human with dogs. Dogs were selectively breed for hundreds of years for certain traits and personality for selected breeds.

It might very well be that blacks in this country are at a disadvantage and it might be true that racism still exist in some part. However, the I am a victim and I need racist white people to start being nicer to me has ran it's course and is helping nobody.

My advise to black people in this country who think they are discriminated against(true or not). Stop blaming the evil white man for holding you down(even if they are) because you can be in charge of your own destiny by improving yourself while you can't alter your future by identifying your misery on others.

Now as an Asian, it does disappoint me that I see a steady stream of Asians joining the politically sensitive group. Asians did not become successful in this country by being sensitive to possible racism. The relentless culture of hard work and commitment to personal improvements through studying is what lead to the success of most Asians in this country.

Education experts say that zero-tolerance policies initially allowed authorities more leeway in punishing students, but were applied in a discriminatory fashion. Many studies indicate that African-Americans were several times more likely to be suspended or expelled than other students for the same offenses.

African-Americans were several times more likely to be suspended or expelled than other students for the same offenses.

The problem is that something can end up marked down on a data sheet as what appears to be the "same offense" but the reality of the two incidents involving two different students may have been quite distinct.

How did it fit into the greater overall picture of each student's behavior? How did each student respond to discipline from the teacher? Did one at least take the trouble to PRETEND to be contrite while the other glared at the teacher menacingly, cursed at her, or even threatened her?

Did one student have a track record of light class-clown behavior leading up to the incident, but when told to stop the chatter, would do so for the remainder of that class period? Did the other student become hostile and threatening or dismissive and mocking whenever the teacher attempted to issue any sort of behavioral directive?

For anyone who isn't clued in to what sort of challenges some teachers face these days, watch some clips of the Oprah Network's show "Blackboard Wars" - it's filmed in actual inner-city schools.

Here's one clip, a very tame one: Link

This kind of stuff is important information to have, to determine if there's any actual unfair treatment going on or not.

Fact is, teachers are some of the most liberal, PC-indoctrinated people in this country. You almost cannot find a single one anymore who isn't a very firm leftist with a head full of "social justice", feminist, PC crap.

If white teachers in our modern climate are incapable of being color blind and treating black students fairly, then NO WHITE PERSON is capable of it and we need to stop trying to make the impossible happen, and give up on this entire failed multiracial society thing.

25 years ago the attitude was that black kids who act up are troublemakers, but white kids who did that are cute or creative. Has anything changes since then, other than cowardly faculty members being more prone to calling the police?

I live by Chicago and found a good site with violence stats: http://www.heyjackass.com/

Check out their 2013 stats: http://www.heyjackass.com/category/2013/

They have a pie chart with homicide victims by race. Just scroll down a little.

79.7% black
18.5% hispanic
1.8% white

Now this is victims, not perps, but we know it's not white soccer moms driving into the black neighborhoods with AK's shooting anyone black or hispanic they see. Most of the victims are killed near where they live, and killed by people like them. This is basically black on black crime, with hispanics being second place in this violence.
So, overall we have 98% of homicides in Chicago that are committed by black or hispanic people. I don't think this is too much of a leap to come to this conclusion.

Why are people surprised that these same minorities get in trouble in school more, and are the majority of the population in jails and prisons?

What we need to do is figure out why and try to fix it. Facts are facts. Stop arguing that 2+2=4 and move forward.

Asians do well in school and in life because of the family structure they come from. They are encouraged to study and compete academically at an early age and there is no excuse for not studying. The fathers are present and they lay down the law. For blacks often there is not father present and the mother is on welfare. There is no encouragement for them and in school academic expectations are low for black students. So they become vulnerable to the street life. But they have made themselves into victims if society and blame others for their collective failures. Asians are not afflicted by the victim hood mentality.

What the bloody hell is a soft, young woman like that doing teaching teens - near adults? She has no place among them but to be victimized. Maybe teachers in that position should require formal training in the armed services.

It's time to bring back corporal punishment. It's 2014 so let's issue tazers.

Talk back? ZAP with a tazer. Fighting? Taze all of them. Parents come in bitching? ZAP them as well.

I'd love for student's grades to be completely public, complete with guardian's names. Parents are responsible for their children, including their grades. It's time to stop blaming "society" for problems, buck up and be accountable.
