i don't think anyone should "get over" slavery. How could someone get over such a horrific event that killed/abused their forefathers? Should the native americans get over the fact that we nearly killed off the entire race?

We should always remember these atrocities and, hopefully by remembering them, we will never repeat the same mistakes in the future.


edit: however, if by "get over it" you mean stop demanding handouts, something for nothing, etc, I agree. I do think that african americans are still not treated equally in america though. I think it is really hard for a caucasian person to see this, but sadly many people in our country still judge people based on the color of their skin.

To ignore history is to come that much closer to forgetting and repeating it. I can't remember the last time I met a Black or a Jew that was unable to go about daily life because of the awfulness of slavery or the Holocaust- I don't think they're having any trouble "getting over it." What people lobby for is acknowledgement that these awful things happened, that people were affected by it, that people should have been held more responsible, and that we should never, ever forget.

This lawmaker's just a run of the mill racist, and nothing else.

Remembering and acknowledging past mistakes is fine, but blaming all your problems on this period of time just gets tired.

One, name one instance of that ever happening.
And two: Well, honestly, it's pretty ridiculous to argue that the situation of blacks and Jews today wouldn't be different (better? Well, yes. Duh.) had slavery or the Holocaust not happened.

stop asking for reperations
stop wasting government time making stupid legislation like the one discussed in the article... voting on whether or not the government of virginia should apologize to black people on behalf of white people. that's bullshit.
