I work IT support for a company, and all our Blackberry Users are unable to use their data service... PIN messages don't get thru.

Apparently Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, et al are currently experiencing some type of Blackberry/RIM data service network outage.

Any others have any info on this?

The outage is North America wide and affecting 100% of users. RIM has not given an ETR, but one would assume they want it up by morning.

The outage started at 8:11PM EST.

RIM's Blackberry knocked offline

Ongoing problem halts Western hemisphere traffic, company seeks to restart system, according to a TV report.

April 18 2007: 7:19 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A massive system wide failure of the BlackBerry network has brought emails to a halt for user's of the handheld communication devices Wednesday morning, according to a report from a New York TV news channel.

The problem, which started at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday, affected Blackberries throughout the Western hemisphere by preventing emails from being pushed to the handheld devices, according to WNBC.

Research in Motion (Charts), which makes Blackberry device and runs the system, was not immediately available to comment on the outage.

Research in Motion is trying to reset the system but expects the problem to last into the morning, the report said.

Even when the system is reset, users will experience delays as the company processes through the backlog of email messages, WNBC reported.

As of Wednesday morning the Blackberry Customer Support Center has a recorded message that says the following: "Please be advised that we are currently experiencing service interruptions that are causing delays in sending and receiving messages."

"We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide updates as soon as they become available," the message said.

Can someone answer this for me so I look like a smart person before everyone else walks into the office. What role does RIM play as far as connectivity is concerned for blackberries? I mean we purchase our phones from Cingular and have a BB Enterprise Server to admin. the data. Does cingular purchase the data service from RIM and they actually handle all of it or what?

All Email/Calendar/Task/Contact data is relayed through RIM's servers.

Yeah it seems some messages have slipped through. I think the problem is they've been trying to bring it back up, a few messages go out, it buckles under the load of queued messages, and they start over.

As the wiz said, *all* messages and Outlook/Notes data are channelled through the RIM relay service before being sent to the various wireless carriers and then to your device. It is a single point of failure, and something RIM will likely have to address in the future.

Think of it this way, Cingular (in your case) is just a reseller of the Blackberry "service". They only provide the wireless connectivity to RIM that they would otherwise not have.

Going through your wireless provider is a good way to get RIM support without paying the big bucks, as well. Usually Cingular will just conference me in with a RIM support person and then I can get the BES answers I need

Strange, that's a pretty large task (not that RIM is small by any means). I was assuming it would be handled by the phone service providers. I guess it just never occurred to me that RIM handles all of it and Cingular just bumps up the price and makes the boxes the phones come in look pretty.

Noice! RIM tech support is far from cheap so they are doing you a big favour!

Yeah... we just sent an email out to the entire company that BB Service might not be reliable. As outlook alerted me, I felt my pants vibrate... if you know what I mean. It's definately intermittent stuff. I'm getting some calls from the Boston area saying they aren't getting any emails on their BBs, but we're fine down here in Tampa.

My last received email was last night at 11:11EDT. According to BES, it hasn't been in contact with any of our BlackBerrys since before 8pm yesterday.

Nah, she is a crackberry addict. No Blackberry means she is tied to her computer all day. She works from home and the major form of communication is e-mail. No 2 hour coffee break without lugging around the laptop.

We've had 'discussions' with friends that are deciding between Blackberry and Treo. They are interesting conversations and this will only add fuel to my side. I told her to get the Treo, but her IT dept convinced her a Blackberry was better.

In the past 15 minutes my BlackBerry has slowly gotten up to date. All users have checked in now so hopefully they've gotten everything stabilized.
