sounds like a good deal but be really careful... if this place goes under you will be screwed! I got screwed by a place like this that I got DSL from a couple years ago... prepaid and then they went under 3 months later!

<< Yep, OOL seems to cap uploads at 128K per second, although in very short bursts some speed testers will report higher numbers due to testing inaccuracies. But the download speeds really really rock. Most of the time 400-500K per second seems to be the average around here in Connecticut with really slow periods like early evening topping out at 300K per second. On the off-peak periods like overnight 600-650K per second is pretty common. Being able to grab 40 megs a minute tends to greatly reduce the time needed for big downloads. Plus OOL is reliable and cheap, a nice combination. I've been with them for almost 18 months now and have nothing but praise. We might get killed on taxes and gas prices here in Southern Connecticut, but for broadband we have it SWEET! >>

You Eastcoast people are funny. THose speeds are laughable! I have AT&T cable broadband and get 1.5-1.7 Mbps and capped 128Kbps up, which sucks. Ok, sometimes is drops to about 600 Kbps (Mondays). But I pay $35/month.

Man, some of you guys are complaining about slow speeds. I had a 10Mbit cable modem 7 years ago when I was in college and now I am stuck with a 26,400 bps dial-up modem connection. Thats right, 26.4kbps. SLLLOOOOOWWWWW. Poor phone lines and no other solution except way overpriced and unreliable satelite internet. Cable modem service won't be available in my town till next year and only at 256kb to start. And you guys think you have it bad. Man, I would give anything to have any of the speeds quoted in these posts. I am totally jealous.

Laughable? For $50/month (no contract, no cable TV), I get 9 Mbps down and 1.1 Mbps up on Optimum Online. In BYTES, I max at 1.3 MB/sec down and about 142 KB/sec up up, any time of the day. Multiple transfer sessions of course. Okay, I'll stop rubbing it in.

NYC TimeWarner pricing is still $60 with basic or no service
I am changing to earthlink today...It'll save me over $20 month after bs taxes and surcharges

Okay, I called Earthlink and switched over.
#@$@#ING Timewarner have been ripping me off couple of hundred $ over these years. Switching the service took only 10mins and the only difference is the email address. I keep the cable modem and everything (Earthlink will provide extra goodies of their own). I was surprised to find out that even the billing is done thru Timewarner although the service is thru Earthlink. So this is pretty much getting Timewarner for $20 less thru Earthlink referral.
No need to change hardwares nor disconnection of service. Just make the change over the phone and wait. If you reside in NYC or any others, CHANGE TO EARTHLINK and SAVE YOURSELF $20 a month.

The only thing laughable is your complete lack of math skills. 1.7Mbps comes out to around 200K per second (somebody with a calculator can come up with an exact number, I'm just guesstimating) which is nice, but FAR FAR from the huge number you think it is. We funny eastcoast people are getting 600K per second. So you're getting about a third of our performance and paying more money for it. Are you still laughing now?

That's 128 kilobytes/second, right? I have OOL (no terajet or toshiba here, just a 3com sharkfin and get 5000kbits/1000kbits)

Hey Optimum Online is not only a Long Island thing. We have it in northern New York too, in the Hudson Valley. But I'm nit picking, I have to agree they provide some nice bandwidth. Still 56k'in it, but I hope to be getting OOL soon!

Although they don't advertise it much, if you prepay for 12 months you get a 13th month FREE! This also applies to your cable tv portion of the bill. As best of all you can charge it to your credit card and build up those miles.

Bah! That's an insane speed for an insane price! I pay $49.95/month for 800kbps/200kbps. That's with the $10 discount for subscribing to basic cable, which is another $36.95/month. My ISP/Cable Service Provider is CableOne.net.

I think OOL should start a mid-west building next month. I'm willing to donate my room for server and equipment space.

Enjoy!

Great suggestion! I hang out there a lot.

I'd actually recommend that anybody who has broadband or is considering broadband service should check out dslreports. They have forums for most of the major BB ISPs, and a lot of other good forums with help on networking and spam. I hang out on the Bellsouth forum, and the Bellsouth techs check in a lot to help out folks with their problems.

There is also good information on maximizing your BB connection performance, and tools for tweaking and performance testing. It is truly a great resource!

Before I differ, you mean 128 Kbytes, or 128Kbits ? I am sure that OOL caps at 1 Mbit -- I often score around 900+ kbits on my nyc speakeasy test..

ftrainwill -- Check out the Optonline group over at dslreports.com.. OOL @ DSLR .. they sometimes have information on when OOL is coming to other areas.. as for now, no OOL for you..

cheers,

Correct, when I use the common 128K phrasing as that's more familiar to more people, that's kiloBYTES, not the kbps which is kiloBITS. The trouble with broadband speeds is that many slower services like to compare apples to oranges and mention that they deliver xxxx megabits or xxx kilobits figuring that the person they're pitching it to doesn't understand the difference. So they'll see 900+ kilobits per second and think that it's 8 times faster than 128K per second when they are in fact about the same speed. That way you wind up with people getting 1.7Mbps and smugly thinking they're getting 1.7 megabytes per second when in fact it's only 1/8th that amount. So to be clear, OOL caps upload speeds at around 128 kiloBYTES per second and downloads are supposedly capped at 10mbps which is 1.something megabytes per second. But hardware limitations and node congestion make that 10mbps more of a theory than a hard limit as you'll never approach that in the real world. You might reach 1 megaBYTE per second with OOL for short periods if you're lucky enough to be on a superfast node at a great time of day, but speeds like that are pretty rare. 600-700 kiloBYTES per second is a more common top end, 500 kiloBYTES per second as an average and maybe 200-300 kiloBYTES per second during busy periods. Still incredibly fast speeds and we OOL users are really lucky in that regard.

I was with you until the very end.

1MByte/sec is fairly common if tweaked properly AND the remote site and handle that speed.

Most users see no slowdowns during peak times. You might get a slowdown if the remote site is bogged down due to peak usage, but it wouldn't be OOL's fault for that. There are some users who might be on a busy node who have night time slowdowns, but for the most part, you can still get 600KBytes/sec and higher during peak hours.
