10mbps down is definitely faster than a T1 (by roughly 9mbps, or 1/5 of a T3), but 1mbps is just shy of a T1's upstream.;0

Get in line!! I'm in New York City too and I can't get Optimum Online because they only serve the Bronx and Brooklyn in New York City (like jaybittle previously mentioned). I'm stuck with Time Warner (2MB downstream, 384k upstream) for $60/month because I don't subscribe to cable TV. Looks like Queens is stuck with Time Warner too...good luck!

Yep, OOL seems to cap uploads at 128K per second, although in very short bursts some speed testers will report higher numbers due to testing inaccuracies. But the download speeds really really rock. Most of the time 400-500K per second seems to be the average around here in Connecticut with really slow periods like early evening topping out at 300K per second. On the off-peak periods like overnight 600-650K per second is pretty common. Being able to grab 40 megs a minute tends to greatly reduce the time needed for big downloads. Plus OOL is reliable and cheap, a nice combination. I've been with them for almost 18 months now and have nothing but praise. We might get killed on taxes and gas prices here in Southern Connecticut, but for broadband we have it SWEET!

Actually, if you're in the city with Time Warner, check out Earthlink Cable. It's been getting some pretty good review on DSLReports and is ranked right behind Optimum Online.

I pay $50 per month and I don't consider that expensive (considering the speeds). Just letting you all know you can get it without contract.

I just checked out Earthlink and it's only $41.99 a month with free installation. Does it use TimeWarner Cable line or something? It's little confusing to me and I am not sure if there is any hidden cost behind this. I currently have Timewarner cable and pay $59.99 a month

Anyone know if existing customers can prepay and get the discount (I don't really need the modem, but I'm sure it will fetch a few bucks on fleabay). I'm still under my existing contract ($29.99/month with Family Basic cable) which expires in June. It's the best $30 I've ever spent (Anandtech deals aside, of course). I'm planning to cancel cable pretty soon (due to the Cablevision-YES Yankee game controversy) so my month OOL bill is about to "jump" to $50 a month. Still a good price IMHO, but the option to prepay and save $17/month looks real good right now.

Same here. Earthlink and AOL use TimeWarner's lines. I was thinking about switching because of the lower prices, but I don't think it really makes a difference because I don't have cable TV service. It's a couple of dollars less...

RoadRunner/TimeWarner is $60/month without tv service, so if Earthlink is $42/month, how's that a couple dollars less ?, that's 30% less ($18/month) or , very hot...

Since RR, EL and AOL are all on the same infrastructure, I'm a little concerned about my RR connection right now. I'm afraid the AOLers are going to leech away all of the bandwidth....Anyway, from what I see, the only benefits of switching to EL from RR are:

A. $3 a month savings (RR DROPPED the basic cable required pricing gimmick)
B. EL actually advertises their speeds and upload / download caps. RR hasn't documented anything and could change the maximum speed at any time.

Other than these things, it's really just a question of what ISP you prefer. I've had really good speeds and fast customer service with RR, so I'm staying put for now. If I were a new customer though, it would be EL all of the way because of the free full installation right now.

God, I REALLY wish OOL would come to the Triangle......grrrr....oh, and throw in Fry's too, from the West Coast. LOL.

No it's not. RR dropped the cable requirement. If you have still have $60 pricing, it's because RR expects you to call them and ask for the new rate. Bastards:
