i know this maybe a dumb question, but how does 8mb buffer improve performance over one with 2mb? I know generally bigger is better, but i like to know how things work instead of just assume....

Again: Is it really that significant whether this is a WD or not?!?! This is a 120 gig 7200 rpm drive for $142... THAT'S A HOT DEAL.

Only a couple companies even MAKE internal 7200 rpm drives at 120 gigs.

For those people that have ordered from Dell before using Ebates, how long does it take for Ebates to credit your account? Is it, when you place your order, when the items ships, or some specific amount of time after you place your order? Thanks in advance

To the best of my knowledge, its after the item has been shipped

It's like a computer with more RAM. Instead of having to swap the the hdd all of the time on tasks (slow), the memory stores the information. I haven't tried a 8mb cache drive yet, but my guess is that access time is quicker off the line, but once you start downloading something it will eventually level out. It should make your computer quicker and smoother.

I know that a 120 gb drive for $140 is hot, but the deal breaker for me would be if it didn't have the 8 mb cache. This is the only reason why I'm going to such a huge drive right now to get the larger memory buffer.

I hope I didn't screw up that explaination too badly.

I have always received my Ebates credits before the items shipped...I have 2 laptops on order that are due to ship on April 25th, and I received my Ebates credit this morning; same with every other order I have done through Ebates, including non-Dell-branded items. The length of time after the order is submitted usually varies widely, and may vary from person to person also.

Guys, guys, guys. This deal has been going for the last month from a earlier thread at a higher price. Dozens if not hundreds of AT'ers have these drives installed already. The drive is an OEM WD1200JB. It is not Dell branded. It is the same as any other OEM drive you'd get at newegg, buy.com, etc. It has the 8mb cache and 1 year warranty.

-10 stackable is a $10 off coupon that can be applied with another coupon.
That other coupon is the 10% off one.
You can find both coupons at f@tw^llet.

Hmmm, I guess the warranty becomes 2 years if you buy with Amex and take advantage of the Buyer's Assurance Plan.

For those that don't know or are still not sure, the Western Digital 120 gig JB (SE) is the ONLY ide hard drive out there with 8mb cache. Therefore, this Dell drive MUST be the Western Digital drive if it has 8mb cache.

Slight correction... WD is the only ones who make a 120.0gb hdd with 8mb cache.

there are others but they are not 120gb... there are some smaller scsi hdds out there with 8mb cache

Now I need a deal on a decent RAID card or 5.25" mounting kit....
